Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm sure this has been the subject many times but for a newbie would you mind doing it again?

I've read A Charlotte Mason Education and Charlotte Mason Study Guide and understand about offering many 'subject areas' (for lack of a better term). How long do you think is effective for each area for a 7 and almost 9 year old boy?

Here are the subjects we've been covering this year (which is our first year).

Bible
Reading with Reading Made Easy
Music (piano practice and music theory) with lessons on Friday evening
Math (we've simply been playing games and doing a few workbook sheets focusing on addition and subtraction. I'm purchasing Math U See (Alpha) at the end of this month
Five In A Row unit study

That's it.   I would love to include a "nature study" each day and keyboarding/typing.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I have a 10yo and a 6yo and our "lessons" are typically 20 minutes or less. If we are notebooking or lapbooking something that may take longer. Some lessons, such as copywork and dictation, take less time.

Oney, welcome and I second Kathryn, especially for my 6 yo ds, 20 minutes per subject is about his max, and then he's off and running to play with his little brother. Sometimes I'll even split it up so he has a break in between a couple of sessions, does that make sense.

Now that said, my almost 9 yo dd can do her subjects all the way through the morning one after another, and we usually take a snack break by 10:30 or 11:00 and then try to do a few more things before lunch. Then it's nature study, piano for my son, outdoor time or activities away from the house.

WE also really try to take advantage of RA time in the evenings as well as more piano and for my daughter, dancing. The kids also LOVE to put on shows for us that may include poetry, narrations, dancing, acting, piano and other fun stuff.

HTH and feel free to private messanger if you want super specific details on scheduling, we all have our own style I'm sure.

I have a 12yo and a 9yo (as well as 3 high schoolers).   My 9yo's lessons are each between 5 and 15 minutes a day.    Some subjects like math we break into sections, like one for drill and one for the main lesson.

My 12yo has longer lessons.... about 45 minutes for math, and about 15-20 minutes for the other subjects.

We put a period for activity somewhere in the middle.   I have my 12yo do something strenuous, and my 9yo usually has a snack and plays a bit.   They start lessons at 9 am and are finished by noon, though my 12yo has reading assignments that sometimes take a little longer.
