My two youngest boys, 11 and 8, just love, love, love to read. This year we are using Winterpromise American Crossing as well as some Sonlight US history books. We have IEW US history writing lessons so I think we will use that. We will be starting Latin For Children. They will be using Teaching Textbooks grade 6 and Algebra. I am designing our religion program based on the liturgical year, the catechism and the virtues because they have really disliked filling out workbooks with Faith and Life and want a break from that.

I am not sure what else I need for Language Arts though. What about literature? I have been looking at the usual lists and they have read a good portion of them. The programs I have found seem to ask questions which are very simple. I think the boys would look at them as busywork. What do moms with voracious readers use for literature? I can't find anything between questions which are checking simple comprehension and high school programs. I would like something to help them think and discuss instead of spitting back facts.

I would like to do some dictation and narration also but I am wondering when and how much. How much narration should they be doing?

If anyone can offer advice as to what I am missing here, I would really appreciate it.

Have you considered using Literary Lessons from the Lord of the Rings for your 11yods? My dd started it last year when she was 11, and to make it more middle school friendly we are doing it over two years. It's definitely not light weight or busy work, and it's really, really fun and interesting.

Wow, I think my boys would really like this. I have never heard of this program before. Thanks for the info! I will definitely be looking into this some more after everyone is in bed.
