Is mater amabilis a catholic version of ambleside online?
Does anyone have a preference for one over the other?

Mater Amabilis is a Catholic-embued CM-style curriculum using current books, etc. Ambleside is very much a reprinting of CM's original works ... so much of it can seem archaic (altho that's probably too harsh a word).
I personally prefer MA -- used it in my first couple of years -- especially as I don't have to worry about the text suggestions and wouldn't have to tweak it (except I have a REALLY hard time following directions, so always go my own way   )

Also adding, since you're not in any "hurry"  with the ages of your kiddos....I would sign up for the MA yahoo group and just start glancing at the daily digests that come your way, as well as have access to the archives there....looking something up occasionally as you have questions about something specific.
And.....then also, start reading the FAQ section at the top of Ambleside, a bit at a time. There is a lot there!!! That should take a couple years!
Your oldest is only 5, so you probably wouldn't start the first year of either of these programs for 1-3 years. Most children aren't ready for a Year 1 AO until they are 7-8 yo, depending on readiness.

Thanks Suzanne, somehow I missed those threads in my search.
You're right, my kiddos are so young I'm trying to learn about everything out there so I can make a decision when the time comes! :)
Right now we are having lots of fun playing and reading books. Thanks for the thoughts on Year 1, it did seem like a lot!

We use MA loosely but I love it!! Whenever I need to re organize myself I look over what is recommended and I usually find something to implement.
I really love the religion a lot.
I am hesitant to use Ambleside too much because I am scared I will run into too much anti catholic stuff. Don't get me wrong it is great but the history and literature scare me, I just don't know if I have time to weed through their recommendations.
That is where MA comes in and saves the day, it makes me feel at peace.
