Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, is everyone getting their Shakespeare issue of Mater et Magistra in the mail?

This is so timely because I just mapped out my read-a-loud plan for next year and included the Shakespeare Tales as well as many Nesbit titles.

I have picked up both the Lamb and the Nesbit versions and would love to ask - how do they compare and which do you prefer? Would one or the other be best for ages 9, 7 and 5?

For comparing, if your library doesn't have both copies, here are the complete texts:

Nesbit's Beautiful Stories from Shakespeare is here
and
Lamb's is here.

I think in general, people say Nesbit's is an easier read. Lamb's a bit more difficult...vocab and sentence structure, details, etc.

We've done two plays this year, and we generally read Nesbit's first and a couple weeks later.....Lamb, if they like the story. My girls that are listening are 7 and 8.

We have Lamb's and love it on our house.

We have a stellar English teacher in our co-op (hsing mom of 4). I sit in her classes and basically feel I'm getting a college degree in Lit and Grammar.

That being said, my 11 yr old reader could easily follow her classes.

She will be offering a Shakespeare class for the junior high next year and will be using Lamb's.

Also, the Catholic hs magazine Mater et Magistra Spring 2009 issue is dedicated to Shakespeare. Go to the link and see the articles offered regarding a complete Shakespeare study in your home. Enjoy!

For the young ones, I think Nesbit is best. My boys are nearly 13 and 9 and much prefer Leon Garfield's Shakespeare Stories. (Just to confuse the issue )

My youngers (under 9) have always enjoyed Nesbit and my olders have liked Lamb. I haven't heard of Garfield, Shari! I am going to see if my library carries it and reserve it! Thanks!

Back to reading my Mater et Magistra--just received it today!!

We, too, do Nesbit for the youngers and Lamb for the older (starting at age 9)   I, personally, like Nesbit better.

The census is in:

Nesbit---elementary level
Lambs---junior high/middle school
Shakespeare---high school

And everyone is now busily Google-ing Garfield's stories.

Just to confuse the issue a little - we also like Lois Burdett and Marcia Williams!

I have a post with links to these here

This thread has been really helpful to me since we are just starting out with Shakespeare. I am slowly getting through the Mater et Magistra issue (during cold windy evenings at soccer practice) and finally came across your article, Cay!

This issue is chock full of ideas!

I totally want that E. Nesbit book! I didn't know she did a re-telling of Shakespeare!

Thanks for the information...
