Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking ahead to next school year and to saving money if we can.   We are currently enrolled with MODG and do not know if we will be able to financially swing it again for next year. Can anyone who has been using CHC fairly consistently outline what they believe the strong points are of this curriculum? I have used their materials here and there, but never really threw us completely into CHC with lesson plans and all. So, while I do have some familiarity with them, this would be the first time we would be "doing CHC" as our complete curriculum.

Thanks in advance!

I've tried several times to "do" CHC completely. Its never worked for us. I don't know if its because I tend to be the type that can never leave well enough alone, or if its because every year is age specific, which makes it hard to school several children all on different plans. I still use bits and pieces of their stuff, but I finally gave up trying to use it as a whole.

This is exactly my dilemma with CHC. I love their materials, and I do use some of it. But I've never been able to figure out how to juggle and keep up with their lesson plans for multiple grades at once. If anyone has any tips, I'd also be eager to hear...

I've used the second grade lesson plans three years ago, primarily to look at the First Holy Communion preparation. We also used their ideas for geography and some of the ideas for English. I was rather disappointed with the presentation of the materials. I thought the lesson plans were beautifully illustrated but for geography much of the work was left to me. The First Holy Communion preparation was a little bit difficult to follow -- I think they have changed that part now. I've also been not very impressed with their English materials. For the lower grades I think that there is too much grammar too fast but no depth. I much rather use Voyages in English which moves more slowly in the lower grades and is more challenging in the higher grades. I don't think I could ever use their lesson plans the way they were written.

I do and I love it. I generally chose the level that best corresponds to my child's reading level. We use MUS instead of MCP so there is no problems where the math and LA don't coincide. Because CHC is "light", we can add other interesting things but I usually try to only add one more "curriculum" like Catholic Mosaic. I also beef up the read-alouds. What I love best about CHC is that it frees me. My time for lesson planning is cut in half because I do use half of their materials. They are very doable with a four-day schedule and the workload is very reasonable. I think it's easy for moms to over-schedule. They remind me that education is more than the 3Rs. Obedience, joyfulness and manners are constantly re-enforced. I love the sweetness of the materials. Childhood is cherished and overly grown-up themes are not introduced early whether academically or emotionally. CHC makes me a better mother and a better teacher. Last but not least, I like the focus on world and american culture rather than world history in the earlier grades. It is much more accessible to my children and matches well with the readings from MA.
