to someone considering homeschooling!
My niece is feeling drawn to homeschooling her three beautiful little girls. My Three Girls
She is bogged down with worries about the school district and paperwork- in NY we have to report. She lives two hours away from me so I can't be real hands on with her.
What words of wisdom would you offer her?

what's the worst that can happen? they make you put the kids back in school? where they are now?

I live in NY and have never found the paper work too over-whelming. A nuisance, yes, but do-able. And the school district really has limited power to interfere with someone's homeschool. I agree with Jodie, what's the worst that can happen? Tell her not to let the jitters stop her from trying! I'm in the western part of the state if I can be of any help.

I think my advice would be to just do it! The first time it might seem daunting but the second time and thereafter, doing all of the paperwork will be a piece of cake!

My advice to her would be to have really concrete reasons for why she wants to homeschool her kids. I call this my "heart reason." Perhaps the reason that she may want to homeschool is because she doesn't like the school they are going to, maybe it is to better instruct them in their faith, or perhaps it is to preserve their innocence.
Whatever the reason, she needs to be really sure of it, because it will be recourse to that reason and that reason alone in some cases why she will be able to perservere when the going gets rough (and as we can all attest...that day surely comes!)

Where in NY does she live, Joann? We live in Amherst, a suburb of Buffalo. I just helped my friend begin all her paperwork for her first year. I went to her house and set her all up for the year.
Once you get your first year under your belt, the paperwork gets MUCH easier! Can she join a homeschool organization? That's been very helpful for us. Joining HSLDA is a must in NY State (at least I wouldn't hs without them, and needed them one year). And we joined the state LEAH organization (www.leah.org), and a local Catholic homeschool support group as well, so we've had lots of support and help along the way, as well as giving it.
Let me know if I can help. LEAH does have a regulatory manual you can buy from them at their website that's very helpful for the paperwork and homeschooling in NY State.

They live up on the St. Lawrence river. They are coming to visit in a few weeks so I can help her get paper work started. They will do a wonderful job!
I do believe there is a Leah group up that way-we will have to look into it.

My advice would be to connect wth other NY homeschoolers - either in real life or online. Makes it seem more real, iykwim? Here's a blog I like, a NY city homeschooling mum..

I agree with Leonie. For the six months before we started homeschooling I took my kids (in kinder and grade 1 at the time) to the local homeschool monthly get-togethers. I got to *see* homeschoolers in action, interact with their kids, and ask LOTS of questions.
When we did take our kids out of school I felt confident because I was already a part of our group and my children had made good friends with a load of homeschooled kids.
