Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

LOL- it is so nice not to have to come up with euphemisms. Most hsers I know personally consider unschooling a mild to moderately bad word. Is it tough to find local, real-life support? It's my dream to have a Catholic eclectic unschooling friend irl. (Ironically, my neighbor is a secular unschooler, but this year her kids are going to an environmental magnet school- whatever that is! She was unschooling b/c her friend was.) Maybe there are other closet unschoolers around me, but like me, they are, well, in the closet- LOL!

Welcome out of the closet    It is going to be OK, we are here to accept you

Hello MONALISA..........

If you ever get bold enough to disclose your location....you may just be one of our neighbors    Of course if you were mine you would know it, we have a habit of making a scene...naked 3yr olds swimming in our yard, chickens and goats getting loose, general mayhem........

I'm in Sydney, Australia - so not close!

But I have many cyber friends who have an unschooling bent and who are Catholic - hey, that is what this forum is for! Connecting others.

A nice interview with Suzie Andres on Catholic Unschooling.

I am not in Wichita, but I am in Kansas!!!

I am also a closet unschooler because not anyone in our small town would think unschooling was even schooling. It has taken me three years to come to terms with the fact that unschooling is what seems to work best for us.

I used to be the one who thought that unschooling was a bad word. I used to think that unschoolers were passing the buck in terms of educating their children. I know, shame on me!

But I have changed my thinking for the better. I, more than anyone else, is shocked that unschooling works so well for us.

I do know all about the isolation about unschooling. Most of the families in our support group are classically educating their children. When they hear that we are basically unschooling now, I see that little smirk creep up on their faces. I know they are thinking that I am messing up my children's education. But then I remember that I used to think like that. If I can change so can they. So I keep talking about it and I keep receiving the smirk. sigh

Blessings,
Julia

Ok so I know I am in a closet, but not sure which one at the moment. :) I am finding that there are so many different perspectives and variations and names for the act of educating your own children outside of the conventional school system that it is hard to find a label. While one person says they are unschooling, another looking in at them might not agree and think they are more structured.   I just really don't like labels, except when it comes to being Catholic of course. And even with that, I find I have to expand on what that means to me, PERSONALLY-the phrase of the culture.

Since you introduced me to Real Learning, I definitely would say I will be more of an unschooler using Montessori and CM as resources. I would hesitate to label not just because I hate labels but also because that would scare my already hesitant dh! ;) I also hesitate since as of now, the agreement is that dd goes to 'school' in 1st/2nd grade. I know God will guide us when that decision presents itself...hopefully.

Either way-I'm here for you and think what you are doing is awesome! You and dh are incredibly great parents! :)
