Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I noticed that in Homeschooling with Gentleness SA mentions a couple of times that her child read comic books. I have fun memories of reading Batman, Superman, the Fantastic Four ( In Spanish of course! ) and I was wondering: are comic books any good these days? Do you let your kids read comic books? or do you consider them twaddle? Are graphic novels the same as comic books? I noticed a whole shelf full of graphic novels at Barnes at Noble the other day but didn't have the time to check them out. Any recommendations?

I don't know a lot about graphic novels, but my understanding is that they are quite mature. I've avoided them because I understand they are generally not appropriate for kids.

Just as an aside, you remind me of a book I heard discussed on our Catholic radio station a while back. It's called Who Needs a Superhero? Finding Virtue, Vice and What's Holy in the Comics. The author goes over several superheros and talks about their virtue and vice in a very interesting way. It's written by a Protestant pastor, so I don't know if all the theology would be right, but I always thought that it might be a fun jumping off point for some sort of a comic book unit study. I might have to pursue that again...

Richelle,
That does sound good! A unit about comic books that is a thought I have to consider. Thank you for the link.

For older children there is a great comic book on the horrors occuring in Sudan and the brave boys who fled called The Lost Boys of Sudan.

Natalia,
We read all those same superhero comics and have equally pleasant memories . However, the new renditions are NOT good, often creepy, andinclude lots of buxom women in sexually suggestive situations. Even my 10yo ds, who is an ardent fan of Spiderman (and who somehow got his hands on a new Spiderman comic), tells me that the new Spiderman comics are scary and not very interesting. He's right! They're awful.

Good news, though: Barnes & Nobles sells the ORIGINAL Spiderman, Superman etc series in a bunch of compendium volumes---all the great old tales, intact, right down to Super Dog! They are paperback, and not cheap (@$15 if I remember), but they're the Oldie Goldies.

My kids all loved the Tin Tin comics, too. I read somewhere that each Tin Tin volume has a vocabulary of 2000 words. I've never counted them, but hey, I like the idea!

There is also a series of saints books in comic book form that are really good. My children have poured over all of them and enjoyed them. I think I saw them for sale in Emmanuel Books catalog.

I agree the older comic books were the best. Today's comics are so violent and as the characters get older they tend to get very sexual. I wouldn't buy any today for my younger nephews. We have a comic store in town and the owner is very watchful of what the kids look at while they browse in the store.

How nice to have that kind of store owner! Around here, the comic book stores are just sort of, hmmm, smarmy (is that a word? )

One exception to the new-comic-books-being-awful discussion might be the Archie comics. They sell them at the cash registers in most grocery stores, and they're fairly harmless. We got clued into them when we were scouring a used book store and found a stash of them. The store owner said we were lucky to find them, because all the Mennonites normally scarf them up right away! Although there is a lot of talk about boyfriends and girlfriends, the series is pretty much still like it was when we were kids. Jughead has not changed. And my children all get really bent out of shape over Veronica's ongoing bad behavior!

What about Tintin Comics by Herge? Those come in softcover or hardcover book-style and shape. They encompass geography, a little history, voluminous vocabulary (much like Calvin and Hobbes ~ only with greater respect of authority and a higher degree of manners).

You can find these books through Amazon or B&N.

Hope I've helped. Tina
