Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Something kept knocking on my front door. I kept looking out and didn't see anyone. Finally I opened the door and in walks a turtle. We are in a very busy subdivision-I don't know how he made it here. Anyway, no one is calling me back from the wildlife center so i was looking for help to id him, see how long we can keep him for observation (and how to take care of him) and where I should release him. (Dry woods or swampy by a marsh or into the Gulf of Mexico)
He's about 5 inches long (I measured his shell) His head and legs are striped green and light green. His shell is dark green with a little yellow. He has red markings behind his eyes. Four toes on his back feet. Right now he's in my bathtub with about an inch of water. He's very active. Thanks!

He ( or she) is a red-eared slider. But what to do with him??

Ok, crisis over. The lady from the wildlife center called and told us to release Freddy (yes, he already has a name) into a freshwater pond. So after the little one is done napping we will do some measuring, picture taking, observation and then send Freddy back home.

(By little one I meant MY little one, not the turtle-although he does seem to be napping right now)

Do you want to keep it? Check with your local laws. Native turtles are protected in some areas.

For more info on keeping Red-eared sliders, see:

Sounds like your best course of action. I really like to see turtles in the wild... !

Yes, after some discussion we decided that he would be happier with his family. And, as my 4 year old said, "How are we going to take a bath with that thing in the tub?"

Reminds me of the time my father bought a pair of young alligators home to give to my cousins...he put the in the tub (and we had but one bathroom) and my mother screamed for a whole day until he took them away (then my aunt got to scream at him...).

Hope the turtle has a happy send-off!
