Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Well, I know we had a discussion on this earlier - and thought I understood what the church defined as what we must believe --- until my dd started reading "Making Sense Out of Scripture" by Michael Shea. We're not quite sure how to make out his explanation of Humanis Generis and other Papal pronouncements. I know that we cannot believe that humans had ape parents in the normal sense of the word (not quite sure what that means but normal sense of the word is the way Michael Shea phrased it in his book). Does this preclude the possibility of an evolving body - now understand this is not necessarily what we think (personally we think this is far fetched and takes tons more faith in less reliable sources than believing in direct creation from the dust of the earth by God), but we do want to know when someone is positing a legitimate theory that we happen to disagree with and when they are positing error. Could someone help us with this?

Not sure whether to post this in science or faith - probably should have posted in faith, but anyways, any help appreciated.

Janet

I haven't read Michael Shea on this, but as I understand it we may not believe either that humans are essentially no different than other animals (which I would think is what Shea is getting at with humans having ape parents "in the normal sense of the word") or that the direction of creation is a matter of chance.

So no, that does not preclude accepting bodily evolution as the means by which God brought about the human form as we see it now (although I agree with you that the evidence for macroevolution is pretty thin).

Hope that helps!
