Seriously.
Nature study? He's got you covered- and for all age students, too.
From Crinkleroot to Hook, Line and Seeker... picture books to nature novels to sketch books: he's on it.
I just picked up "Sketching Outdoors in Summer" from the library- love the pictures and the gentle how to sketch notes in the margins.
It seems to me as if many of the nature journals out there are written by women. Some are more feminine than others, with lots of flowers. Not that boys don't like flowers, but JIm Arnosky has fish, barns, wheel barrows, tree stumps, etc. in his.... you know, the kind of nature journal a guy could leave lying around his man cave. 
He has such a wealth of books to chose from, too. I love how my kids have been able to grow with all his beautiful books!

 i agree completly! We love Jim here and were so sad to see some of his books culled from the library. Just means I need to buy a bigger bookcase :-)

We have often felt the same way. He is one of our favorite authors and one of the few we've made an effort to have personally sign every one of his books we own. He is very engaging if you ever get a chance to attend one of his book signing events, you should. Fabulous books.

Oh, Martha! How did you ever get to meet him? I would love to get to see him in person. He is definitely book-shelf worthy!

He tours libraries, and some other places if they book him, giving 1-2 hour presentations and then staying easily twice as long to sign books. The first time we went he was in our town. Dh has taken the kids twice to other talks in other states nearby as we heard he was coming around. He really does travel a lot and for each of his books, he goes to where those animals are and spends some time watching them and learning about them. Really a neat guy who seems to love his life's work just as much as his fans do.

You have given me the idea to check and see if he will be in my area anytime soon. We would love to see him live.
I just got a copy of "Secrets of a Wildlife Watcher" through Paperback Swap.
What a gem of a book! I love feel of the thick, creamy pages and the detailed drawings. Also it's cool that there are blank pages at the back for taking notes. I ordered this one for ds, but I don't think I want to give it up right away!

Oh, I just saw that book and posted it to your non-fiction for boys thread. Let us know how you like it. We just got our used cooy of Hook, Line, and Seeker in the mail today, and my boys were beyond thrilled!

This book is wonderful... it walks you through the how-tos of wildlife observation... things like building blinds, interpreting bark on trees (if a piece of bark is missing.. what does that mean), how to find hard-to-spot animals, etc. It is not overly long at 60 pages, and there are lots of detailed drawings. Very boy friendly.
I just got Arnosky's "Monster Hunt" from the library, I thought it might be scary, but no- it was very scientific in a fun way, exploring possibilities and asking questions. Very nicely illustrated as well. I am thinking I must pick up a used copy to bring out in October . I just wish it was longer and went into more detail.... I would love to hear more of his thoughts on this subject and the scientific evidence he's examined.
I have no real interest in things like the Loch Ness Monster, but the way he presented all the information was intriguing and drew me in. I could see this one leading to some serious rabbit trails.
