Is anyone doing the Journey North Mystery Class this year?
We have never participated, and I think we are late to start this year but I'm going to try!

Yes, there is a lot of catching up to come in with only a few weeks left. I think if someone had done it in the past it would less of a challenge to come in late. There is a learning curve for first time and trying to go back and do all the calculations for past 9 weeks in truncated time could be hard. Someone coming in late doesn't have the advantage of gradually experiencing the increase (or decrease southern hemisphere) of daylight hours which is part of the experience as well. That being said, I don't want you to not give it a try because it is a really cool activity.
My suggestion would maybe be to just pick one location out of the ten mystery classes to track and catch up with, not all ten.
We have done it many past years though aren't doing this current year.

It's really fun, claireg....and if you really want to do it this year, follow mary's advice.
Keep it in mind for next year.....I put it on my calendar to get it on my radar and get things organized the beginning of January next year, because we really want to do it again. Next year, no pregancy or newborn, so it'll be do-able, and I'm looking forward to doing it with a couple older kids this time around!

I am kicking myself for not initiating this here on 4Real - I should have!
Lissa and I are doing it again with about 15 additional children. So fun! We were mentioning that it would be fun to just jump in now that the cultural clues have come out, but you would miss out on that gradual learning of latitude, universal time, longitude, international date line, etc.
But, you have two weeks until the final clues come out. I would do exactly what Mary and Suzanne recommend. Choose one mystery city and start at the beginning. The website is full of extra information and they have added extra worksheets that might be very helpful if you do decide to jump in now. Maybe you dedicate the next two weeks to Geography and do one worksheet along with the following each day.
If you decide to give it a go, I would do this:
1. Choose mystery city (9 would be a good one - I only know which country it is at this point, but it would be a good one and interesting and different)
2. Print the graph
3. Begin at Week 1 (January 31) and record data in a notebook and on your graph.
4. Continue calculating and recording data for all weeks to present
5. Calculate Longitude, sometimes tricky, but there is a worksheet to print to help with calculations
6. Print out the continent and country clues
That catches you up to today.
I would also search 'Journey North' on this forum and read the threads for helpful information.
In our little class, it is often hard to tell who is more excited, Lissa and me or the kids! :)
Oh, oh! If you decide to supplement with this mostly excellent movie, Longitude, you will want to be aware that there is some gratuitous nudity in the second disc. I must have fallen asleep when we watched it a few years back and I did not preview for this group. But, did I show it to our sweet little group of kids on the biggish screen in my living room? Yes. Yes I did. Mortified. I think overall it is suited to a bit older group, maybe even high school, but it does tell the excellent story of the discovery of longitude. As does the book The Longitude Prize

So, Suzanne, what do you do to organize for next year? Iwould love to do this but always remember too late. Would love to know what I can prep ahead of time to really do it on time next yr.

Well, if you go ahead and register on the Journey North site now, you will get the emails letting you know when it is getting ready to start the Mystery Class in late January. You will get emails for other JN classes as well - You don't need to do any of those to participate in the Mystery Class, but doing some of those as well is a good intro into other aspects of seasonal change like migration, blooming (Mystery Class focuses on change of length of day). You can prep in the fall as part of geography studies by going through the tutorials Erica mentions that are on the site.
