Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 16yo ds has expressed an ongoing interest in Meteorology. Any suggestions here on books, online classes, activities?

Thanks, Kelly in FL

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but this book is on my personal wishlist.
Field Notes From a Catastrophy
It looks like a very interesting, factual, but non-alarmist look at climate change.

Thanks, Theresa, I'll look into that one. I've found a lot of interesting books to read like "Sebastien's Storm" (Galveston Hurricane), "Hemingway's Hurricane" (the great September Hurricane of the 30's that swept the Keys), "The Day the World Ended" (volcanic eruption of Mt. Pele, which greatly affected the weather) and so on. These, and the "Field Notes" seem like good starting points. Still, where to go from there? This being Florida, we're ideally situated (unfortunately) for studying hurricanes and lightning (Tampa is the Lightning Capital of the World), but I just can't seem to get any ideas to gel---probably because *I* know so little about the subject. Hmmmm. One of my brothers is a sailor (and a sailmaker), and the other is a pilot---both are very attuned to the weather. Maybe I'll pick their brains a bit, too.

Has anyone ever heard of any online classes on Meteorology that would be suitable???

Thanks, yall. Kelly in FL

Hi Kelly!

Another great hurricane book is "Charlotte's Story" (couple on Elliot Key for Labor Day Hurricane).

I know several of the sailing schools offer how to read the weather courses but I sure can't find any links this morning...

What about training to be a weather spotter? My sisters went through the course in Jr. High in the mid-west and thought it quite cool to be activated for spotting tornadoes and wall clouds and all.

I found on-line Basic Training from the National Weather Service and NOAA at SKYWARN. Local classes are being offered this time of year as well.

Jennifer,
I thought of you as I posted. Living on a sailboat makes one particularly attuned to the weather, doesn't it? I'll check out those ideas and links. I've never heard of being a weather spotter (do they have this in Florida??) Sounds interesting.

Thanks for the ideas.

PS Why do I always write "Sebastien's Storm"...that's meant to be "ISAAC'S Storm"!

PPS My brother, just down the road from you in Marathon, has "Charlotte's Story" and has recommended it, too. I saw a bunch of good books at the Pigeon Key gift shop, too.
