Do you have a weather radio? We recently were given one as a gift, and it has been delighting the kids by popping off every time there is the potential
of severe weather in the area.

I am wondering if there is something educational we might do with this radio, other than be informed of dangerous weather situations.

I know it is meant to be an alarm system, and it works very well for that (no chance of sleeping through that noise ). I'm just wondering if anyone has come up with any other way to put it to use. I'm thinking unit study??? Something??? Ideas??

Oh, I love our weather radio. We have two and use them often.

We haven't done a weather study or unit, but it's listening to the terminology that has led to further interest of understanding (and further reading and observation) of temperature, of differences between watches and warnings, what kind of severe weather can happen her, as compared to what can't, dew, humidity, winds, etc.

We also observe weather signs that are consistent with the warnings -- the sky darkening, winds picking up, thunder -- we start anticipating the weather radio, being able to tell what is more severe weather rather than just a passing shower.

The Weather radio also has given both fears, but also allieved them with my older son. It's been a journey.

And in all this, I've picked up books along the way to elaborate.

Storm in the Night by Mary Stolz

Thunder Cake by Patricia Polacco

Rain by Peter Spier

By no means complete...these are the ones we've done recently. I'd love to compile more titles!

Just thought of another aspect, how we learn geography with it. We learn about the state, county and city we're in, and the surrounding counties and states by the alerts and looking on maps.

And we also learn about our geography, as to how our house is built on higher ground, what parts of the city nearby is more flood-prone, etc.

We have a weather radio here and it is a necessary tool! In the spring and fall, tornadoes are regular visitors.

There are some really great weather printables at Enchanted Learning.

Jenn's right in that learning the counties of your state is a helpful tool and would fit well with geography lessons. Check with the geology dept. at your local university for a map or printable. For our Alabama Natural History lessons which I wrote based on a series of public television programs entitled, Discovering Alabama, I found some amazing geography resources available through the University of Alabama!

Study about the National Weather Service since they are responsible for issuing the warnings on the weather radio. It might be fun to try to coordinate a field trip to the local office. They have some informative articles on their kids pages, and you might find further information on their weather education resource page.

Also, we're really enjoying the Weather unit at Mater Amabilis. I've tweaked it significantly since I'm using it with older children, but it would probably be a really good fit as-is for your crew, Melinda!

To say that we are weather-conscious here would be an understatement.    Have fun with your weather radio!!!!
