I figured eventually we will want to have this topic somewhere........may as well start now. 
Today we read a lovely book:
A CORAL REEF TALE: OLD SHELL, NEW SHELL by Helen Ward
The illustrations are gorgeous watercolors.
The story is simple......about a hermit crab, of course......but the back of the book has pages that cover all of the marine life in every picture. Has A LOT of info about the Great Barrier Reef. Did you know it is 168 miles at its widest point??? WOW. So, it can be used for all ages.
What are you favorite ocean life resources?
MY favorite resource is the Pacific Ocean

No fair.
I am now plugging my ears and will not hear another word about ocean life and coral reefs and the PACIFIC OCEAN!!  la, la, la, la, la....
Seriously, I miss the ocean so much it sometimes hurts.
We did a wonderul ocean tide pool study years ago when we lived in southern California. Before I had ever heard of nature notebooks, we made our own and filled them with drawings, narrations, xeroxed photos and memories of our times in one of the State Park beaches.
Then we moved to land locked Ohio.
And every year we make a trek to the east coast to get our ocean fix.
Sounds like a great book.
Have you seen those books called Brain Boosters (by Educational Insights)? We have several. There is one called Undersea Adventures that we thoroughly enjoyed when we studied the ocean. It includes games and an answer "decoder" (ooooo!). The kids loved that.
Can't find them online. Maybe they are out of print.
Enjoy the ocean for me.

Oh.. I hear you Julie! My mil lives a quarter mile from the beach in Florida and I savor my visits there. Just walking the beach in the morning with the pelicans diving and the waves making music- that fresh salt air. It is like another world.
We never made a notebook, but when I write in my little journal what we do with informal learning, so much has come from our trips to Florida- watching and drawing pelicans, learning about the protected manatees and sea turtles, shell collecting, hurricans that passed through (luckily we werent' there at the time!), beach erosin, fishing and how to catch the various types.. well you get the idea.
One of my most vivid memories was last visit we were on the pier fishing and hundreds of jellyfish were floating in the water.. a whole school.. I guess they travel in schools?- it was amazing.
I am reading Kon Tiki atm... wonderful book on marine life and living on the top of the ocean on a raft. Beautiful, quaint 1940s language, too.
Oh. I think we get to go back to Florida next month!

This is such a lovely book..........paintings of the sea.......with great poetry and quotes!

The Underwater Alphabet Book by Jerry Pallotta. Sounds cheesy, but the illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and the text is fun and very informative. Its focus in on life in the Coral Reef.

Two years ago we went through an ocean kick after participating in a great tidepool class. I just pulled out some of the resources we used, and now I'm thinking we may revisit this subject when it warms up around here . These were some we liked:
Stories from Where We Live: The North Atlantic Coast (there are versions of this for other areas of the country)
Seashells in My Pocket: A Child's Guide to Exploring the Atlantic Coast (from Maine to Florida)
The Seaside Naturalist: A Guide to Study at the Seashore
... and can't forget Pagoo! One of our favorites .

What's in the Tide Pool
At Home in the Tide Pool
Now I'm feeling wistful for warmer days ... but since this isn't beach weather (here in the northeast anyway!) I thought visiting the aquarium might be fun. Recently we were mesmerized by a PBS show called Window to the Sea which took us behind the scenes of four different aquariums in New England, Chicago, Monterey Bay, and Hawaii. Before we go it would be fun to read Aliki's My Visit to the Aquarium.
With younger kids, it's fun to make up "ocean stories" in the bathtub (or even the kitchen sink) with plastic sea creatures like those in the Ocean Toob. I found them online here, but I have seen them at craft stores.

I'm so glad this topic was brought up. We rented a beach house for a week next month in FL, in a small beach town on the Atlantic coast. We just finished Seaside and Wayside and the middle boys are excited to visit the 'real live' seaside! Thanks for all the recomendations, perfect timing!!

I would add Over in the Ocean In a Coral Reef which we just discovered. It's a cute chant along story to the tune of "Over in the Meadow," but the amazing thing about it is the illustrations. They are all done with polymer clay (Sculpey/FImo) and are incredible and very life-like. It would be fun to "recreate" them as a go along art project.

One of our all-time favorite picture books is "The Sign of the Seahorse." It is illustrated beautifully and has lovely rhyme and imagery.
We are hoping to make an ocean visit in the next month, so I am going to print out all the suggestions!
