When I was preparing for taking care of my newborn, I switched from ordering books from the library to ordering videos/DVDs.

One excellent series we happened upon is the Amazing Animals series from DK. Henry the Lizard is the star for this series for kids from about 3yrs to perhaps 10yrs old. So far we've seen 12 videos (30min long) and I've ordered 12 more. There is an excellent facts and figures with live action scenes broken up by very short 'silly' cartoon sections. My children have learned tons of animal facts, more than I've ever gotten them to remember from a book series and I've had plenty of time with my newborn.

I do highly recommend this series for those indoor days even if one doesn't have a new baby.

Thanks for recommending this. We have the cd - rom, but have not used it for a couple of years because we only have a laptop (2nd one in 2 years - they are delicate!) and the desktops went to Nana's. I think it is time tor retreive them, since she doesn't use them and the children really enjoyed learning about the animals. Thanks for reminding me about Amazing Animals and for the video recommendation, I had no idea they even made videos.. they are next on the list.

We are huge huge Henry fans. My ds likes to watch the videos and report to me all he has learned. I am quite astonished about the amount of information he has learned from these videos. Our favorite is Scary Animals!
