Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is it "legal" to send thistle?
Thistle is the new bane to our fields. We have some in the pasture and unfortunately in our hay field. Larue, the farmer who makes hay from our land, is very unhappy it is there because it reduces the value of the hay. If only you could see him shaking his head in disgust-multiflora rose, mad cow disease, prices of seed more than doubling in one year, land prices so high farmers cannot afford to farm, one beef butcher where there were many(and not a very good one),state programs that take farmland and return it to wild land--paying the owners more than a farmer can pay, thistle in our fields...    Fortunately he is used to having to deal with a woman, this woman, in charge of land decisions.
That said, I love it--the goldfinches go crazy for it. I have seen a whole flock on it--just do not tell Larue.

Hmm. Thanks for pointing that out Viv. I had not thought about that (I don't grow hay...at least not on purpose ).

My thoughts were two-fold...

My first thought was scientific--growing thistle is interesting and the plant is pretty, if sharp. My second thought was poetic--it would be fun to share some of the "down of a thistle." Of course, if it is an agricultural nightmare to share thistle , that's the end of that (is thistle for bird feeders sterile?). But if anyone wants just the "down" I can tuck it into an envalope and send it off.

If you live on a farm, or near one, no thistle!
