Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is so sad.    I just don't understand why people do this. We will pray for these people and their families and their whole community.

Oh, this is awful. Why have there been so many school shootings recently? We will be praying for all those involved.

Praying for all involved.

This is so tragic.    Kids are not even safe in an Amish school.

Bullying, sex ed, random shootings - the only safe school is home school. We can't protect them from EVERYTHING but having them home gives us a "little" more comfort and control.

I decided after everything happened with my daughter Elizabeth that I could NEVER allow my children back into school, public school especially, but even a private school would have to be an absolute last resort and I can't even think of a reason that would be sufficient.

Every time something else happens it just strengthens my resolve to make sure my kids never step foot in "school."

This is of course by no means the main reason we homeschool. We have homeschooled since 1994 for many reasons but it just seems every year things get worse and worse in the public school system.

We need to pray for all students and teachers in all schools.

Blessings,
Krisann

This is just devasting. The Amish are such gentle, pure-hearted folk. I had to break this news today to several of my Amish friends, awful, awful.

O St. Michael, cast into hell satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world.

I hate stories like this! Why does anyone think it's a great idea to go into a school and shoot at random! What have we come to? It seems to be worldwide.

Definitely saying prayers and hoping my teacher husband never has to deal with this.

The whole thing is so baffling and our community here is just reeling from all of it. This is so sad and frightening. I just heard another one of the girl's has died . . . there are still seven children in the hospital in critical condition.

Pray for all of them and please pray for the gunmen's family as well. I just can't imagine how the man's poor wife and children must feel tonight.

Prayers being offered for all these families. This is so senseless and tragic. We are still reeling here from last week's Colorado attack.

I saw on CBS news tonight the "Free Speech" segment which featured Brian Rohrbough (whose son was killed at Columbine). It is a very strong personal commentary on the cause of these attacks stemming from removing God from our schools, moral relativism, lack of respect for life with the acceptance of abortion and suicide. It was really powerful and amazing to see it on primetime news.

I can see how students shooting at other students might involve removing God from schools but this was a one-room Amish schoolhouse. The man who shot was not a part of the Amish community. He just chose that school because it was easy to do what he wanted there. I can't imagine a safer school in terms of teachers, students, even location. But it didn't have the bells and whistles of modern security (who would have thought that was needed?). And I'm guessing God was very much a part of the curriculum--this didn't have anything to do with what's worng with schools, but everything to do with evil in the world. This is almost like someone crashing a TORCH event in a parish hall and doing this kind of thing.

I thought of you all day Michele. I can't imagine how this will ripple through the autumn countryside that is your home.

That's it exactly. It's just not a "school shooting" in the way others are. It was easy access and isolated. I am having a hard time with this today. 3 years ago I visited an Amish school during the school day (about 5 miles from where this happened) and the memory of it is still so clear. The children, the teacher, the mother's with babies. I can only imagine the horror of it all unfolding yesterday. And those mother's being told to leave with their daughters left behind to be killed. Oh my heart just aches for them.

In many ways I feel quite frightened by it all. The really awful violence we have seen here in recent years is just not typical of the quiet safe place I grew up in.

I know it's not just here but really all over and you are right Elizabeth that this has everything to do with evil in the world. But when that evil strikes so close to home it's all the more frightening.

I need to get busy doing other things because if I keep sitting here and thinking about this I will be in tears all day. Do keep praying.

Not that it has any bearing on what happened but the shooter was homeschooled.

I am sure the mass media will eventually pick up it and there will be calls for more legislation and the whole "socialization" issue will be brought to the fore again. One of the reasons we left PA was the amount of legislation they already have.

Praying for all involved and that the mass media somehow misses this part of the story.

A sad update to the story, two more girls died overnight; they were 7 and 8 years old.   That makes 5 girls who have died. I think there are still 5 hospitalized, 1 in critical and 4 in stable.

Blessings,
Krisann

Yes. The names of those who have died are:

    Naomi Rose Ebersole, 7
    Anna Mae Stoltzfus, 12
    Marian Fisher, 13
    Mary Liz Miller, 8
    Lina Miller, 7

Five other girls remain hospitalized. Three, ages 8, 8 and 11, are at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. At last check, all were in critical condition.

Another girl, age 13, is at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. She was upgraded to serious condition Monday night. The girl is unable to speak but has been able to communicate with her family through eye movements. A 6-year-old at Penn State Hershey Medical Center hospital is in critical condition.

As I don't watch the news I have only caught snippets, what is the reason given for these killings? I had assumed it was because they were Amish.

I notice there are only girls who were killed, do they have single sex schools?

This is so terrrible I always think of the Amish as being so special. Maddie, how did you go having to tell your friends. My heart goes out to the Amish.

In a word, awful, as it coincided with a robbery at an Amish farm of a friend of mine while we were out together in the middle of the day! As we were rushing back to see if his wife and child were okay, we heard the horrible news on the radio. It felt as if the world had turned on the Amish that day. Now, looking back I see it was just a coincedince, but what a horrible day it was here for my community.

No, he sent the boys (as well as the teacher and some mother's who were there) out before he barricaded the doors. It seems he has some very sick plans but was thwarted because the police arrived much sooner than he thought they would.

Edited to add. It is not believed that he chose this school because they were Amish but simply because they were accessible and isolated.

There's a beautiful picture on our diocesan website this morning: http://www.hbgdiocese.org/

An Amish boy is embraced by his mother during a Holy Mass celebrated by Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Diocese of Harrisburg on Thursday Oct. 5.
