Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My very first high school friend has been diagnosed with glioblastoma - brain tumor, cancerous, with tentacles. Median life expectancy from diagnosis is two years. Surgery is not a great option because of the reach of the tumor.

She is strong-willed and smart, the type of person who can normally beat the odds. She is facing the most insidious type of brain cancer.

She was raised Catholic but has not practiced her faith in many years, except to have her sons baptized to please her parents and grandparents. Still, she knows the truths of our faith (Dr. Tim O'Donnell of Christendom College was our freshman year religion teacher) and the importance of the sacraments.

Thank you so much for praying for my friend.

----

Update 9/18: Many prayers are needed Tuesday, as my friend will have surgery to remove a much of the tumor as possible. Chemo and radiation will follow. The prognosis isn't great, but doing all of these things is far better than doing nothing.

I appreciate your prayers.

-----------

Update 9/22: Surgery is over. Prognosis is bad. They couldn't get all of the tumor, so aggressive chemo and radiation are necessary. In addition, my friend is now paralyzed on her left side. She may or may not regain some use of that side of her body.

I'm no expert, but I am begging God for a miracle because that's what's needed.

Thank you so much for praying.

-------------------

Update 1/27:

My friend has made good progress with her left side weakness, but found out yesterday that one of the tumors is still growing despite chemo and radiation treatments.

Please pray for her and her family, especially for hope and faith during this very difficult time.

Will pray for your friend, Nancy, that this time of great suffering will bring about a conversion. It is the same situation and prayer for my dad.

Nancy, this also happened to my dad after his surgery and he, after time and also physical therapy, regained all movement except for a little in his hand. He looked like he had had a stroke (which I learned later that he did have a small one during surgery and he is not allowed to drive now because of it), but overall, he recovered from that. He just finished radiation and will begin chemo next week.

So, while it seems hopeless, there is hope. My dad's situation as far as his faith and soul is serious and nothing seems to have changed there, but I hope God gives him and your friend more time for conversion.

You are a good friend, Nancy.

Thank you, Erica, for your message of hope. It helps a lot. I will continue to pray for your father's recovery and conversion.

Someone close to me had the exact same thing happen with his first surgery to remove a tumor. With therapy, he regained 99% of feeling and movement. His tumor would not have responded to chemo or radiation, so he didn't have that. However, within a few years, technology advanced to the point that the entire tumor was removed. Please keep us posted.

Thank you for this encouraging information, Anitamarie!

I so hope my friend's tumor will stop growing so rapidly once chemo and radiation begin, so she can benefit from advances in science. With this type of cancer, it's really difficult to remove all the cancerous cells.
