Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please could I beg prayers for a neighbor family, who have also been members of our parish: a single, older mom and two young-adult daughters. Mom also has a son in his early 40s who has had brain cancer for some time, and just received news today that he has about two weeks left to live. He has a wife and children and is understandably devastated to be leaving them. And his mother is understandably devastated about everything.

We have known the mom and daughters for a couple of years now. I don't know their whole history, but it seems obvious that it's very full of pain. They are very fragile people, both financially and emotionally. The mother is broken down, obviously, over her son's impending death, but as she poured out to me on the phone tonight, she also feels cast off from the church -- apparently over the summer there was some kind of scene between her and our priest, whom I love but whose bedside pastoral manner is a little "tough-love-ish," I guess you might say.

I don't know what it was all about, though I get the impression that it was the kind of thing that someone in a less fragile condition might just shrug off. But to her it was this huge break -- a signal that the church just didn't care.

I knew that I hadn't seen them at Mass for some weeks, but had thought that this was because they were spending time with the son, or else with two girls' father, who apparently is also in a bad way in terms of health. But as I learned tonight, it was because of this great breakup.

So they could use all kinds of prayers: for the son to have a peaceful, holy death, trusting God's grace to be present for his wife and children in the days and years ahead; for the consolation of the whole family; and for healing and reconciliation for the mom and daughters with regard to the church.

Thank you all so much. And a belated thanks for your prayers for other intentions I've posted in the last few months, all of which have been answered in miraculous ways.

Remembering your intentions as well.

Sally
