Today we are heading to the wedding of my niece. All the kids are invited. My sister's family has always been very high class...and this wedding will prove to be the same. (the favors are actually bottles of wine the make themselves) I know we don't match up with this family and my sister has never really approved of our lifestyle and feels I have neglected the children because we have not been to Disney....don't take vacations to Hawaii and go on cruises. She just doesn't understand our life at all.
I am very nervous...the kids are wearing Wal-Mart clothes which can be used at a future date, and I have the same nice clothes (not super fancy like we will see today) to ok.
I am dreading today...I am fearful, and full of anxiety and really do not want to go but feel obligated because this is the only daughter of my sister. (the bride has bought a house with her fiancé and they have lived together for over a year and a half.
Please say a prayer that I can get through this day without a meltdown...I don't feel inferior, and no one comments to the children about what they lack..
Thank you so much...I know you wonderful ladies can pray me through this day.
Blessings to you all,
Joann

Joann - I am DEFINITELY sending prayers and hugs your way and I am SO PROUD of you and your family! This is NOT an easy kind of thing to walk into - but you stayed within your family's means to do it, and you've earned my respect!!!!! I admire you so much! Set today up as a "treat day" so that you can have some little things to look forward to - encourage the kids to THOROUGHLY enjoy the food! And grab that bottle of wedding-favor-wine and bring it home for you and hubby to enjoy alone tonight!!!! Celebrating YOUR fantastic marriage!
Sending many and prayers that you can keep your chin up, a smile on your face, a prayer in your heart for the new couple, and that you can treat today like a secret scavenger hunt of goodies to enjoy! Pretty flowers and yummy treaties!

Will pray, Joann! Have fun and be joyful. Money does not mean happiness.
Jen, your response is beautiful and made me teary-eyed.

I know this is late, but I am praying. I sometimes feel the way you do at family gatherings...I buy my clothes on sale or at consignment shops, and I will be wearing said clothing at my husband's promotion ceremony next month. Hopefully no one will ask me where I got the outfit...
You and your family are a wonderful example of marriage and family life - perfect for this young couple - you may never know whom you'll inspire at this event, but I can easily imagine some friends of the bride and/or groom looking at your happy family wistfully, hoping that some day they can find a spouse who is loving and loyal and successfully raise as many children as God gives them.

Thank you so much for the prayers....I sure felt them.
We just got home...and everything went fine.
One thing I didn't know was that my younger kids--8,9,and 12 were the youngest kids there. It was a very adult reception. My kids are the youngest first cousins so that is why they were included. It was a little hard for them some of the time, but we were at one of the beautiful Finger Lakes in NY and we could head off for walks when they were getting a little too "done".
The guest were probably half were very well off and looked the part, and acted the part, but the rest were just regular folks, so that was a blessings.
Thanks again for the prayers and the wonderful kind words. You don't know how much they helped me today.
(Picture will be following on the blog...that was one way I could step aside and catch my breath... by taking photos of my family!)

Dear Joann,
I saw this late but prayed for peace for you and that you would all have fun. I just saw the photo on your blog - you all looked just lovely and classy and happy. I am glad it went ok.
We have to attend similar family gatherings which are very stressful (well we never get to go to the weddings, because they are always in exotic and far away "wedding destinations" )
Just wanted to say - did you realize that you were probably the "wealthiest" family there - all those beautiful children. Maybe the other people looked at you and felt inferior and wished they had such a beautiful large family!!
Like Nancy - we do a lot of thrift/consignment. My kids have no problems telling people where their clothes are from either! I am still wearing the same clothes I wore 25 years ago - and they are now back in fashion!!
Also - my experience is that people would be attracted to the love and joy in your family. I try to remember that in my hospitality. Our house is not the "better homes and gardens" one - but is always the one where all the children and teenagers gather.
Bless you for going even though it was stressful.

Ohh...and I wanted to add that if your sister feels your kids are neglected w/o a trip to Disney, Hawaii, etc...I would suggest to her that she's always welcome to pay for her nieces/nephews to go on one.

Oh Kathryn! That is exactly what I wanted to say! Her "poor neglected" neices and nephews could have a fairy God- Mother of an aunt who blesses them with such gifts.
Glad it all went well, Joann!
