Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This week in VBS, I have in my group a little boy (9yrs) who is diabetic.
Such a sweet little soul- but he is really struggling with being "different".

It is so hard for him at snack time when his premeasured snack with his name on it comes out in a special bag and then a nurse comes and takes him away for his medication. A couple of times during the program the kids have gotten little treats that he could not have, either

This is hard for me for his sake and also because I clearly remember the days when my dd was on her special diet and felt the same pain.

I am also struggling to understand his mother. She comes to pick him up each day with two other kids in tow, and sits at the back of the church just texting away for 20 minutes, never looking up. She has never spoken to me other than a nod when she takes her son home.

I feel we all need some extra prayers during this week!

Praying with empathy esp as a dear friend's 6 yo dd was just dx with diabetes a couple months ago. Her mom is actually not taking her to VBS this year b/c of all her needs with this being so new and the constant fluctuation of her blood sugar.

One thing our church does though is that NO extra treats are to be given to ANYONE outside of scheduled snack time and that's mainly b/c of all the food allergies. I would bring this part to the leader(s) and possibly, in the future, not allow these kinds of things. I know that life isn't fair and we all have to learn that but in the comfort of this one week program, I don't think it's too much to ask that those with food allergies/diseases not be excluded so any extra little treats should not be allowed, imho.

That's too bad. I assume he is on shots? My son is diabetic and on an insulin pump--this allows him to eat anything he wants at any time (assuming that someone knows how to operate his pump, of course, which a nurse could learn to do). He's definitely never been denied a treat or anything like that.

There are many ways of managing diabetes in children and it always makes me sad when some of the better, more flexible options aren't being used.

(Of course, the parents/doctor might have their own reasons for not using a pump--I hope I don't sound too presumptuous. I just know that the insulin pump has made my little diabetic's life much more normal than it would be otherwise.)

I know my friend's daughter that is recently dx this isn't an option...for now...but possibly in the future. She did tell me the reason but I can't remember so I guess there are times that the pump doesn't work. Actually her dd's blood sugar tends to go low and maybe that's why. ???

Anyway...sorry Melinda he wasn't able to make it. :-(
