Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

...as they choose their next Patriarch. There are three contenders and one would seem to be more open to dialogue with the Vatican. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be fully united with our Eastern brother and sisters in Christ?

Here is the news article.

UPDATE: A new Patriarch has been elected! Here is the news article

It is awesome news, this man is one for unity that I had mentioned previously. May great good come from his appointment for the Russian Orthodox and for Catholic Church.

Anne,
It seems to me that the new Patriarch is against the unification.

Addressing the incense-filled gathering earlier, Kirill had made a strident call for church unity and urged the faithful to resist Protestant and Catholic proselytising, dampening hopes of a transformation in poisonous ties with Rome....Kirill's comments echoed the tough approach of his predecessor, who resisted attempts by late Polish Pope John Paul II to reach out to Catholics in ex-Soviet lands and who refused to countenance a papal visit to Russia.

I think the phrase "church unity" here means within the Russian Orthodox community. Am I reading this wrong?

Well, this is very confusing.

From CNA.com:

Fr. Alliende also mentioned that ACN has enjoyed "fruitful contacts" with Patriarch-elect Kirill since 1992 and that he expects the Catholic-Orthodox dialogue to improve under Kirill. This intensified dialogue will enable the two churches to “together tackle the challenges of the present time that all Christians face," Fr. Alliende said.

Yes that was confusing Matilda, I didn't read that Australian news article too well and relied on what I had originally read from a Catholic news source, which was this:

Russian Orthodox near choice of new Patriarch: reform candidate faces resistance
January 26, 2009

Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk, the acting leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, heads a list of three candidates to replace the late Patriarch Aleksei as leader of the world's largest Orthodox body. The three finalists were chosen by the Synod of Bishops; a local council of Moscow clerics will make the final selection this week.

Metropolitan Kirill, who has been the top ecumenical officer for the Moscow patriarchate, is regarded as a 'reform' candidate. His willingness to engage in dialogue with the Vatican has dismayed some Orthodox conservatives, who have pressed Kirill to retract a statement that the Catholic Church is a part of the true Church; the traditionalist arm of the Russian Church insists that only the Orthodox Church is the true faith.

Metropolitan Kliment of Kaluga is regarded as the traditionalists' favorite among the three finalists. The third candidate is Metropolitan Filaret of Minsk, Belarus.

So I do think that this man is the best candidate for issues of unity with the Catholic Church from Catholic news source which I'd like to think would be more reliable than the secular sources who tend to like to sensationalize things..a bit like the secular response to the SPPX at present..
