Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

On Sunday I spent the day in bed with a fever, headache and mastitis on the right side. This is the third time since the baby was born 8 weeks ago. Now, within the past fifteen minutes, my left side is extremely sore. I have taken phytolacca every time. I'm sure I'm just not drinking enough water. I don't think I'm doing too much. I drive my 18dd to work every day and go to Mass on Fridays. I should be able to handle that, right?

Please pray for complete healing. I'm praying for all your intentions.

Ruth, this may not be the case for you, but I have found that my cases of mastitis and/or plugged ducts almost all coincided with a 'cheat' on my allergen free diet. Last night, mozzarella sticks, today, mastitis! So maybe there is something else going on if you don't feel that you are run down in general or doing too much.

Prayers for a speedy recovery for you!

Ruth, I am so sympathetic. With #5, I had it three times, too.   With #8, twice, and several episodes of painful plugged ducts. I think we just are so over-extended and get run down?   Sending love and prayers.

Ruth,

A few things to check:

Does your bra fit well? If you are wearing a bra w/ an underwire, get rid of it! Underwires tend to put pressure on milk ducts and can cause plugged ducts/mastitis.

Apply moist heat to the affected breast, nurse frequently on the affected side, preferrably with the baby tucked into bed with you so you can rest. Then rest some more. Did I mention rest?

Praying for healing for you!
Dawn

Praying for you, Ruth! I remember having multiple bouts with Sophie. It was awful. Rest, drink, nurse... and rest some more.

Our Lady of La Leche, pray for us!

Thank you all for your prayers. Last night I was in extreme agony. It's never hurt like this before. I could barely more from side to side to nurse. I was finally able to fall asleep after 3 am and I went to bed at 7. I'm going to keep reading all your suggestions and figure out what is causing this.

Off to rest and drink some warm tea.

Ruth - I had mastitis for the first time with my 3rd and it was sooooo awful. I'm begging Our Lady of La Leche for relief for you. Praying you can stomach a gigantic amount of water, and can get that baby latched on to the sore breast. The nursing specialist I went to said I should try to get the baby latched on to the affected breast with his little chin pointed at the most sore spot - a lot of football holds for us. And like Amy mentioned - watch your diet.   Sending - this is such agony!

Ruth,
This is not a holistic remedy but one that has worked for me many, many times. Ibuprofen--as much as 800 mg every six hours (it helps with the pain, body aches and also is an anti-inflammatory so it helps with the plugged ducts)--water and complete bedrest WITH baby so you can nurse, nurse, nurse--these are my tried and true remedies...

Ruth: maybe it't time for a call in to your physician for antibiotics. Ultimately, you get to a point (especially if you are sleepless and possibly feverish) that they will bring the surest and fastest relief. I know I have needed them.

I have taken hot baths or showers and massaged, massaged, massaged the infected breast. Also, changing nursing positions, especially football hold or lay the baby down on the bed and sort of "hang" over the baby to nurse. But, I also do not hesitate to start antibiotics once a breast infection has gone so far. I can only endure so much and still momma a baby.

Dear Ruth,
I will be praying that this will pass quickly for you. I have had mastitis many times and been hospitalized on two occasions with intravenous antibiotics given to me, the infection was so bad. It all usually happens very fast for me.
With my first child I decided that 3 bouts was more than I could bare so I ended up bottle feeding her, even though I was very disappointed with this. My fourth child gave up breastfeeding overnight; he just would not take the breast. I ended up back in hospital again and him on the bottle. With my fifth child I got the worst case and as I was living in a very rural location, no doctors or hospitals for miles I had to treat myself. I fortunately had some antibiotics on hand that helped within a day or two. Expressing (with a hired electric express machine which I brought back to the country with me as I wanted to be prepared) the milk out when it was to tender to put baby on was of great relief. Lots of hot showers and gently massage over the area was another big help.
It has to be the worst feeling and my heart goes out to you Ruth.
Breastfeeding has never been something that I have been very good at and I may start a new thread to ask for some guidance on this as I am currently struggling with it again.
God Bless to you and your little one.
Chemai
