Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

DS age 11 is in a cast that is over is arm and thumb. Will be in cast for 6 weeks for sure! No use of thumb on that hand! This is not a waterproof cast and no swimming this summer. Can't believe how many things in life need 2 thumbs!

We have an xbox 360 - can't use - need 2 thumbs; Wii - most games need remote and nunchuck (a few he can do that only use remote); gameboy - need 2 thumbs!

I got out some board games and put out near the kitchen table to remind us and he and neighbors that we can play those!

Any ideas!!! Activities and fun stuff to do at home. Any game systems that don't need 2 thumbs to do!! preferable one handed things as only part of his 4 fingers show in this cast. Also - this bone (scaffoid) can be poor to heal so I am being REALLY careful about what he does. So (even if we didn't live in Texas where only thing you can do outside is swim in summer) out side activities are fought too

No hints

Just thought someone might have been through it! Can't get the cast wet. Doesn't have use of that thumb (can't even open his own bag of potato chips!). Lego's were ok yesterday if he uses a big flat piece to put the rest on, but he's never been a big lego user. Got 4 Wii games yesterday that only use the remote (now that took some research!) . Never realized before how almost ALL video games one needs 2 hands - with both thumbs!

Since this bone in notorious for healing poorly - I am being super careful with him. Maybe others with cast ride bikes and scooters and play tag but no way I am letting him! You can still bump a cast and jar the bone and if it already is known not to heal well - ugh!

Idea's for at home, indoor activities for 11 year old boy - one arm in cast - can't use that thumb.

How about games for the PC or online games? He could still work the mouse with just his finger tips. You can get cheap copies on eBay of the Oregon trail, Amazon Trail, etc. which dd 13 finds fun, and they even fit in some historical/social studies type "schooling" on the sly. There are lots of other games that can be played online, too, not just historical ones, but dd has enjoyed On the Trail of Captain John Smith a lot. Hope this helps a bit. Trying to keep a kid from being too active is for the birds! We had to keep our poor 5 year old boy from being active for a period of only days recently after a fall on his head, I can't imagine trying to keep a kid from too much activity for weeks!

We don't do video games enough to matter if this happened, but last May, my then 14 year old son broke his knee. He had knee surgery and needed many, many weeks of physical therapy. I remember him reading a lot and watching movies. I think I have blocked it out of my memory to remember much more. :)

We're in a similar position trying to find things for my 4YO to do this summer while in a non-waterproof chest-to-toes cast. TV has been a favorite so far.

Not "fun" but.. what about doing some school? hopefully it's not his writing hand that's in a cast.. but if you do school now while you can't do other stuff, then he can look forward to a school break when the restrictions are lifted instead of not being able to do stuff now and then be stuck doing school later too.

So if his writing hand is free.. you might also do some artwork.

And if you're where there's some museums and the like you could do some of that sort of walking and looking at stuff. And look for things like air shows happening or hot air balloon stuff or anything of that nature where most of what you're doing is really just walking around and looking and watching other people.

Jodie,

Well, instead of full day of school - I am doing 1/2 math lesson, read chapter book 20-min-1/2 hour per day and also a reading comprehension workbook. This we usually try to do each summer but end up doing less then more! This summer - we will be sticking to this!

I did get 4 new wii games that just use the remote and we have been playing board games (which we usually forget we have!). For museums I am looking into local little ones to visit and combine with lunch out.

Oh - also dug up history channels: "america the story of us" to watch a little every day. We didn't get as far in U.S. history as I liked this year so instead of finishing the text we will watch some of the video.

I like the art idea. I think I need to go through what we have here. I always have stuff around that I have forgotten I have!

Pilgrim - I like the pc game idea! Actually I think we have oregon trail for his iPad that got deleted so I need to "un- archive" it! So time to go through apps we archived and see what we can put back on.
Thanks for the ideas!
Barb
