Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sky Boys: How they built the Empire State Building

by Deborah Hopkinson
ill: James Ransome

This is such a GREAT book! Told through the eyes of a young boy. Describes the building process and illustrates how the ESB was a symbol of hope during the great depression.

Oh, we enjoy this book as well. I'm a big Deborah Hopkinson fan. I have the start of a unit study to go along with this book, that I have wanted to do for Homeschool Share. I'll have to get on that. There are all kinds of neat projects and go-alongs that could be studied in conjunction with this book.

May 1 Update:
On this day in history... the Empire State Building was opened to the public (1931).

Great book to bring out to remember this day.

Interesting tidbit: Part of the reason that the building went up so fast is that, at that time, all commercial leases began on May 1st and ended April 30th. They wanted to be able to have tenants right away. My Dad just told me about this over the weekend when we were visiting my Grandfather in N.Y.
