Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can anyone suggest some wonderful living books that would be appropriate for a sensitive late-elementary age child (preferably books with relatively happy endings or at least not very depressing books) for the following time periods/locations:

- British Empire Africa
- WW I
- The Great Depression (America)
- China under the Communists
- US Civil Rights

Thank you in advance!

WWI - Bruce by Albert Payson Terhune (the kindle edition is free) - Bruce is a collie that goes to war as a courier dog during WWI, there is a time when they think the dog has died but then they realize that he was only unconscious. So I don't know if that would be too much for your child or not.

Dear JodieLyn - Thank you! (And it just happens to be my favorite price, too. ) My dd loves animals, and not-really-dead should be OK if I warn her ahead of time. That looks like a great book -- I just downloaded it to my Kindle.
