Gee, I never thought I'd post here.

I just received two skirts that I ordered. (It seems funny that I was afraid I'd have nothing to wear as the weather warms up and I received these skirts today, which is blustery and freezing cold.) Looking at them, I thought, "I could make these..." Now, could someone tell me honestly, are skirts are harder to make than they look?

These are 100% rayon, which I don't know yet if I'll like wearing. Is rayon easy to work with? It looks like I'd just need to learn how to make an elastic waist.

Are there any skirt patterns or pattern brands that you recommend using? Any advice would be appreciated.

The kind of skirt you linked to IS incredibly easy to make.
A simple A line with an elastic waist. In fact I have fabric and a pattern on my sewing table right now to make some just like these. I am finishing up my sling tutorial today and then I will post pictures as I make the skirts so you can see just how simple it is. I need to get my sewing donw because i am moving into a busy season and won't be able to sew for many months.

You wouldn't really need a pattern for this kind of skirt but it's nice to have one...especially if you are just getting started.

Here's a few I found:

Simplicity 7513 this one has slits but you could make them much shorter if they are too high for your taste...or make the skirt fuller and leave them out altogether.

Simplicity 7229

Simplicity 4881

FYI Simplicity patterns are a $1.99/each this Thurs. through Sat. at JoAnn Fabrics

I'm sure the other pattern companies have something similar...but I haven't looked.

Thanks for the links Michele, and for the tip about JoAnn's. I think I'm going to try this. Do you have any suggestions for fabrics? I will add your sewing blog to my bloglines list so I can see your pictures when you have a chance to post them.

Anything you'd like really. Wovens or knits, for a pattern like this either will work just fine. Rayon is OK to work with but if you are going to wash the skirt in the washing machine and dry it in a dryer, wash and dry the fabric 3 or 4 times before sewing with it because rayon has progressive shrink. Or just wash the skirt in cold water and always hang it to dry. I prefer to preshrink my fabric as much as possible because I have "helpers" with the laundry who don't always wash like I would.

I'm upstairs sewing now (typing on my old laptop here that is hooked up to an ancient monitor because the laptop screen is dead) - I'll post the pics in a few days. I just finished really simple skirts for my girls over the weekend so look for those pictures later today.

I posted here about the skirt I made basically making my own pattern. I have made two more since then.

My pattern is made out of freezer paper

and it's really easy, based on my measurements. PM me if you want more specifics based on your measurements.
