Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Please, please tell me I am not the only crazy person on this board? Somehow I suspect not

I'm having a lovely time at present organising our home library. Sometime back my dh encouraged me to buy Readerware a book cataloguing program. Finally I am tackling the mammoth task of entering all our books into the database. What takes so long is many (more than half) of our books are pre-barcode, so they have to be entered manually. But the barcode books are soo fast I have a new scanner and am loving it

One tip is to be sure to tick off books, inside the cover, to note they have been processed. I began this job before and many books have been entered, but because I didn't tick, it is a bit of a mess.

So does anyone else use a database, catalogue program to keep track of their books?

Hey! Those are my bookshelves! (minus the labels - I've not gotten that far!)

I started to use Readerware but that harddrive went kaput before I could back it up. I want to get back to it.

There are many threads on here about organizing books, including threads on Readerware and other software.

I seriously need to get one of those. I've had it on my wish list for at least two years.

I would LOVE to do that sort of thing with my books..

Alas, I've had to let it go and just not even think about it other than some loose categories for shelves or I'd go out of my mind trying to keep up with that on top of everything else.. but one day...

Catholic Mommy,

See I knew I'd find people who do 'crazy' things like label their bookshelves

Oh no!! how far into cataloguing your book were you before your computer died?

I've read all the threads on organisig books In fact I've probably chatted in most

Jodie
I'm doing a shelf at a time, it can take me up to an hour, so the goal is to do one shelf a day, usually before everyone is up. Could take up to 60 days to get it all done, poking along at this rate.

Oh, that's so inspiring. I've been watching your process and it's just too mouth-watering. I'm still trying to find homes for all my books, so I don't think I'm at the stage to computer organize them.

And after this week working on a project and seeing the chaos that ensues around me, I can't help think that unless I get a helper or get up early like you say, I'll never get it done.

I need an older child!

ooohhh....I can't wait to tell my friend from my local group about this! She is a "crazy book organizer" and has her entire home library labeled ala dewey decimal system! She did admit that her oldest dd did a lot of the work, and it took them an entire summer. Just wait til she hears about this!

Thanks for sharing!!!!

Stacy

Love to hear any tips from your friend, I thought of dewey but felt organising by subjects and sub-subjects worked best for us.

Jenn

I find I'm culling again, I have to ask myself, "Is this book worth the effort to type in?"

I'm really hoping to get up to my picture book bins today, I haven't ever culled them and frankly some are so, blah.

I'm following along, too! I'm really discerning the software tool you're using, Erin!!! My iphone will scan barcodes...I wonder if that will work with Readerware? I need to look into this a bit!

I'm loving hearing about your progress though! Please keep us updated so we can cheer you on and you can blaze the trail for us!

Jen

How exciting of it does. By memory I think I paid about $60 for Readerware.

Update; I've entered and marked three bookcases (6ft tall) and three picture book bins. I'm onto the very long bookcase up the middle of the room. What I'm the most satisfied about is entering categories for the books.

This is exciting! I recently purchased an iphone and after reading your post Erin, I searched the apps to see if there was a library one - there is! It is called iBookshelf and cost only $2.49AU. I have entered in a few books so far (by scanning the barcode with my phone). After entering the barcode, it looks up the book on the internet, shows the cover and all the information about the book. If the title doesn't come up, you can take a photo of your book with the phone and use that photo. You can group them any way you want (by title, author, genre, read, unread etc), so I have entered all my Advent books in, and have grouped them by Advent/Christmas in preparation for the season. You can also note if you have read it, or are in the middle of it, or if you have lent it out or even borrowed it. Would also be good for wishlists. Unfortunately I have found a bug in it and am waiting for them to fix it up (when I search by title or author, it comes up with the book 'rebecca' every time, but I imagine they will fix it soon). Now I just need to figure out how the backup system works - I would hate to lose it all. I am also wondering how much memory it would use to have all my books listed.

Natalie

I was so excited to read your post another organising booklover They don't have a limit on the amount you can enter do they? It is only that I was originally going to use Library Thing and they limited at about 2000 books (I think I'm remembering correctly)

I've entered 6.5 bookcases so far and the three picture book bins. I find I tend to go in spurts, have a day or two where I do a couple of bookcases and then several days off. I'm looking foward to completing our library (3.5 cases still in there) and moving over to the children's bookcases. Most of them have barcodes, manually entering is labourious.

Your find is so exciting, keep us up to date.

Erin,
Wow, you do have a lot of books! I seem to be ordering from Book Depository quite regularly and wonder if I should be borrowing more from my library, but my children just love reading so much and I love books - it's a perfect match
I'm not exactly sure about the limit of books on the iBookshelf app. It says it has been tested with a database of over 8000 records.
I have also emailed the author about the bug and he said it is in the process of being updated.

I have an unlimited account at LibraryThing. I bought a CueCat so I could scan into the computer. This can avoid the crashing hard drive.

I haven't done much because I don't have a system in place for making sure I don't duplicate. I like the check mark idea, Erin, but I'm genetically unable to make marks in books. Never could. Not even in college.

Book Depository is just best friends for us Australian gals

KC

I do understand you totally, I find it hard to mark books too. I only use pencil though, couldn't bring myself to use pen.
