Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have a favorite audio recording of the Messiah? I would love to find one that has the scripture passages read on it. I know so little about this work, other than the famous Alleluia chorus. (I know so little about music in general )

Any children's books that help teach about this work?

I am not a music expert either, but I purchased this complete recording many years ago on CD and I love it.

Love,

Hi,
Does your library system have any? You could listen and decide which to buy.
God bless,

Bridget,

I've had good luck with several recordings without listening first -- from old records and Christmas cd collections. I don't think you can go wrong as long as it's the full Messiah chorus, and not some modern adapted version. I've had some abbreviated versions, that don't include all the pieces except the major ones, and those still are lovely.

I found these sites to have very helpful information:

Wikipedia

This seems to be a very definitive site, which also includes the libretto (words)

And since even during Handel's time there was discrepancy at what version to use, perhaps this from the above site can be helpful:

Quote:
Therefore it can be bewildering to sort out exactly which authentic version of Handel's Messiah - if any - to perform. The most satisfying historically accurate reconstructions generally date from the early 1750s. Ironically the rarest version heard in modern performances is the 1742 Dublin original. Yet Messiah, in one form or another, remains a well loved and familiar masterpiece that can cope with being presented in numerous ways. Conductors usually pick and choose their favourite versions to make an inauthentic composite programme, but the character and flair of Handel's music is rarely anything other than supremely dominant.

More text sites:
Text to Messiah which also gives the Scripture quotations.

Print out text.

Where we are there is always a Handel's Messiah sing-a-long concert or two. One place gives out free tickets after a certain time but you have to wait in line. It's neat to see how many people are carrying their own score and read along and sing along.

Dover Publications has an inexpensive music score.

Easter is when I blare the Hallelujah Chorus, and Christmas "For Unto Us a Child is Born". When I'm getting dressed for Midnight Mass that's the song I play over and over.
