Any of you have a favorite collection of hymns that you (or your kids) play from regularly? Something well-suited for family sing-alongs. Something I could play w/o having to spend 30min/day practicing.   

I can play the piano...I'd call myself "proficient". I love playing the piano, but at this point, I want to enjoy music, not spend lots of time practicing, kwim? I have a little booklet of Catholic hymns that I can sight-read, but I'm looking for something bigger, with more variety.

I had this in my inbox waiting for a time to answer. I don't have time to insert links, but while it's on my mind.

What I really like to use are Catholic hymnals that have the 4 part harmony (choir edition), or organ accompaniment. I highly recommend the Adoremus Hymnal, the organist edition. That has some nice basic hymns, relatively easy accompaniment that you can open up and play. (This is available from Ignatius Press)

There is also the St. Gregory Hymnal, which has two reprinted editions, one from GIA, and another from Neumann Press.

If you are blessed enough to get your hands on a Choir Edition of the Pius X Hymnal you will be in heaven.

There is a fabulous hymnal from Midwest Theological Forum called Cantate et Iubilate Deo . Currently the project only has the single line melodies but they do plan on printing an accompaniment sometime in the future. I am impatiently waiting for that!

Just saw this today and thought I would pass it along.

First of all, Maureen Whitman shared 20% off at Adoremus Books

Adoremus Books has the Adoremus Hymnal Collection. If you are looking for very simple piano edition, Alan Jemison has easy piano arrangement, although it is somewhat pricey.

I think the choir or organ edition would be quite adequate, but I don't know your piano skills. The difference in price is choir edition is regular hard bound book, and organ is a three hold binder that opens flat for playing.

Okay Jenn, I would describe myself as having "modest" piano skills. I saw that you reccommended Singing bee on another thread and checked it out from my library. I can sight-read most of the songs in there, or play well with a little bit of practice. I'm looking for a collection of hymns on a similar skill level. Do you think the Adoremus organ edition would be too hard for me?

Isn't that "Singing Bee" a great collection? It works so well with one-on-one with a child, or in a group setting. The music is attractive, but to see the pictures and hear the nursery rhymes sung and played, they just eat it up.

Anyway, I digress. The Adoremus Hymnal is much easier than Singing Bee. Really. Most traditional hymns are so metrical easy, mostly chords. And the chant tunes are single line melody with a little chord on the bottom.

Oh, it says "Organ edition" but I don't think there are any pieces that have foot pedal notations, so there's no difficulty reading the music.

For those teaching your kiddies to play piano, using hymns is a great teaching tool. My piano teacher required a small book of hymns at an early level. It teaches the skill of playing legato, or smoothly.

And yes, I LOVE Singing Bee! My 3yod sits beside me at the piano and picks songs for me to play based on the pictures. I'm planning on ordering my own copy as part of my homeschool curriculum purchases for the coming year.

Looks like I'll be ordering an Adoremus hymnal as well!
