Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Shoemaker Martin
Based on a story by Leo Tolstoy

Do not let the title fool you. This is not another shoemaker & elf book. It is MUCH more. Oh, and there is no elf.

While reading a passage in his Bible one evening, Martin, a poor Russian shoemaker, wonders what he would do or say if Jesus came to visit him.

He hears a voice telling him He will come for a visit the next day. Martin receives several visitors....he gets them out of the cold to warm by his fire, feeds them, ect.

While reading his Bible again that evening he hears a voice asking didn't he recognize Him? Martin realizes Jesus did come to visit him. Reading his Bible where it fell open...the last sentence in this wonderful picture book quotes a favorite verse of mine....a wonderful reminder....

Inasmuch as ye have done it unto the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

This was a GREAT book!

Micheala ~ Tolstoy's stories are wonderful, aren't they? My main exposure is through EWTN's little 30min movies of them (they are cleverly done in Plasticine which I understand the Russian's are expert at.)

There are few of his religious tales and Martin the Cobbler (Shoemaker Martin) is lovely as well as Michael the Visitor which is a adapted by Tolstoy's What Men Live By I was pregnant with my Michael and due any day when I first watched it and I bawled and bawled and bawled, over the angel coming for the mother's soul (leaving behind twin babies.)

They are profound in their simplicity and moral teachings.

I would love to get hold of this book!

I thought I'd bump this thread because Tolstoy's story, "What Men Live By" has been a story I have pondered upon in the last few days with stories and prayer requests of mothers dying or who are seriously ill in Australia and the US, who have small children....

Michael the Visitor is a lovely children's movie that captures the spirit and message of Tolstoy beautifully.
