If it's any consolation, I hated E. T. but I love much sci-fi.
I was thinking that the original Star Gate film is quite good (though we learn early in the film that the son of the main character has died in an accident with his dad's gun). My kids loved the scary bits, but also the Egyptology--think Indiana Jones with a space travel twist.

We enjoyed "The Village" - definitely a thinking film, no real violence ( more implied) and no s**.
Also Deja Vu with Denzel Washington - just a few things you may want to ff through.
Firewall with Harrison Ford was ood - too violent for me at the end but the idea was interesting.
We also like all the old 1960 Miss Marple mysteries/thrillers...Oh, and the old Vertigo with Jimmy Stewart. And North by Northwest with Cary Grant.

I have the director's cut--lots of blood. Some brief nudity. The first target is an android who works as a prostitute. Thinly veiled homoerotic tension between the creator and one of his creations. Other than that, it's fine  . |

HAHA I'm glad I asked! Guess we can count that one out. Funny how the mind blocks out "key" aspects over time! I once checked out a movie for my kids that I had seen THREE times in the past 25 years, completely forgetting that it has a (totally gratuitous) scene where a stripper jumps naked from a cake!  Yuck. I couldn't believe I had forgotten that part. Gulp. It obviously pays to ask!

Is it sort of like saying "I hate peas" but I've only eaten canned peas and never eaten peas fresh from a garden? So all these years I thought I didn't like sci-fi because of eating canned ET . Bring on the garden sci-fi!

All this talk must have given me the taste for a good thriller. I just posted my review of The Skeleton Key on my blog.
The Skeleton Key starring Kate Hudson is not for young viewers (so ignore this one for your kids) but I found it pretty tame and it does give you a wonderful taste of Louisiana culture. I wanted to mention it because so many of us seem to appreciate M. Night Shyamalan's twists and this one, directed by Iain Softley, bears that mark.

Thanks so much, Cay! When you talked about the connection between thrillers and being with your mom, I thought, "My mom and I have the same connection with musicals!" Also, I lost my stomach strength after becoming a mother...glad to hear it might come back .
