... family read-alouds? I'm trying to start doing a different read-aloud each month with my littles (but sometimes the older will be listening and sometimes dh and grandmere too) -- so, what would be your list of must-reads?
We just finished Redwall which I think is a must-read. And it's great for all ages, too!

Oh, and someone asked me did I mean picture books or chapter books. I'm thinking of chapter books -- those that take commitment on the part of the read-alouders, the listeners and the family ... the ones that take a couple of weeks to read and everyone is trying to steal the book to read ahead....y'know????

Caddie Woodlawn, Rascal, any of the Little House books (including Lissa's--actually I think Lissa's are better than Laura's).

These are interesting lists -- for those books that you all say and then for those books listed that are only on one person's list -- really cool....
But I know there are lots more of you guys out there that do readalouds -- what are your top 12?

Oh what fun! We are in between books right now and I've been wondering about Redwall and at what age to do
Lord of the Rings. I have two ds 8 and 5 and a dd 3.
We loved reading Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little and Trumpet of the Swan . We've also read a few Saint biographies. I think we'll read one about St. John Bosco as we get closer to his feast day.

I am reading aloud "Charlotte's Web" with my ten year old - a must!
And for teens - "Hatchet" and "Lord of the Rings." I've read these aloud twice, to two different sets of teens in my family...
Oh, another book I've read aloud twice - to older ones when they were middle school age and to the younger set as they have reached that age - "From the Files of Mrs Basil E Franweiler" by E.L. Konigsburg. Very funny, lots of discussion, rabbit trails...
And, of course, as Elizabeth said - any of the Little House books.

I agree with most of the above (some I never heard of) but I didn't see:
Princess and the Goblin ~ George McDonald
Hans Brinker ~ Mary Mapes Dodge
We especially loved Princess and the Goblin. E. Nesbit is one of our favorite authors too. We enjoyed The Railway Children by her.

I just finished Redwall with ds 8 and 4 and dd almost 7....they loved it so it shouldn't be a problem for yours. You might want to do Hobbit with yours and then go to LOTR -- LOTR can be rough going and a bit dragged out for the little ones

We did this one last year and the littles LOVED it! We had all kinds of rabbit trails with museums, Michelangelo, etc......I'm so glad you mentioned it!

Thank you Mary, I think we'll start the Redwall series right after we finish our St. John Bosco book.
When do ya'll have your read aloud time? We try to do it in the late afternoon but I find that we often skip it because dinner has to be made, laundry done etc. I'm thinking we might start doing it after dinner on nights we don't have to go back out for anything.

I read The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe to my kids before we went and saw the movie.. so my oldest two were 7 and 8.5 and they were literally sitting on the edge of their seats while listening to it.. it was wonderful.. so that has to be our all time best book read aloud.
There's a couple that are really good but much shorter chapter books that we've enjoyed.
The Year of Miss Agnes
Stone Fox
The Mouse and the Motorcycle
then there was also
Old Yeller (my kids were probably young for this but they kept bringing it to me for more to be read so they got something from it)
The rest of the Narnia books
The Ugly Princess and the Wise Fool
