I know many people are birdwatching this time of year. We just found a picture book that would fit in perfectly with your study - or interestAn Egg is Quiet by Dianna Aston and Sylvia Long. It is all about eggs - mostly bird eggs. The illustrations are stunning. It talks about egg shapes, colors, camouflage, size,texture,and beauty. It discuss how an egg gives the little creature inside food, a home, and air. Click on the back cover at Amazon take a look to see the picutres. Each carefully depicted egg is identified by species and the adult is shown in a two page spread in the back. It is really charming!

Oh, Marjorie, I'm so glad you mentioned this book again. We, too, love this book - we used it this past spring/summer and mentioned it in our bird book list. You're right the pictures are magnificant. The other book with beautiful egg pictures that I think is fabulous, and mention frequently because of that, is the Maryjo Koch book,Bird Egg Feather Nest (which is out of print and a bit spendy when you can find it used).

This spring I'm planning to use these books as models to paint a variety of wooden eggs to look like the real eggs pictured - then make some kind of nest display.

I was able to ILL both of these books. I am sure they will go along beautifully with the Beatrix Potter unit study we are doing.

I was inspired by the books recommended here and expanded upon it to try to bring life to what may have been a very dry beginning for the new school year. I actually have a science curriculum thing going on here this spring. I am so not a follow the book sort of a girl. In fact yesterday I disassembled the book and inserted it into our weekly binder and put the boring bits away in the back of the hanging locker! Anyway, here is the post and here are the extra books we've used so far. Everglades are emphasized.
Into the Woods
Bird Watch
Wings Along the Waterway
Everglades Forever (not strictly birds...)
She's Wearing a Dead Bird on Her Head!
And two movies, Fly Away Home and Winged Migration which I loved, loved, loved! An animal documentary that didn't treat me like an imbecile! It just shut up and let the filming do the talking rather than blabbing on about what anybody with eyes who's watching the movie could see in the first place!
(sorry about the little rant there)

I'm posting this here so I can also thank you for giving our new year a great start!

An Egg is Quiet and Bird Egg Feather Nest both arrived today. My librarian paged through An Egg is Quiet and thought it was beautiful. I suspect we'll be getting our very own copy soon, lol.
