Have you seen Neumann Press Christmas offerings? I am crazy about illustrations by Masha. They only have christmas Carols book. I have the Nativity story, but both are really, really gorgeous.
Which brings me to another, older, but beautiful book, The Christ Child by Maud & Miska Petersham.
And it's been mentioned before, but I'm just in love with "The Trees Kneel Down At Christmas". What a wonderfully thoroughly Catholic book!
I was wondering in this book and perhaps future ones that you highlight the new in-print books, but perhaps have a list of suggested books that are out of print, but worth finding a copy?

Thanks for mentioning this one, Amy. My father was born during the depression and can still remembering getting only a bag of nuts and one orange for Christmas. I look forward to readding this one.

Yes! With the capabilities of Inter-library Loan these days, this is worth considering. People would go out of their way to request a wonderful book on the recommendation of a trusted source (that would be YOU!  ) And with all of the used book sources on-line, you just never know when a used copy is available.
Hmmm...Although....with CHRISTMAS items, maybe ILL isn't so useful...do libraries give up their copies so easily with holiday items. .....just thinking out loud.

Hi Cay! Congratulations!
We, too, enjoy Trees of the Dancing Goats. The Jewish grandpa has the tradition of carving animals for the children for each night of Hannakah. When the Christian neighbors all get sick before Christmas the Jewish family cares for them. It's a beautiful book because it shows Jewish and Christian traditions, and the families sharing and caring for each other. I don't want to give away too much of the story - your library should have it. Last year my son made me some 'dancing goats' and other animals for Christmas, copying the designs from the book. I just love them, so this year he added to my collection (actually, I just posted a pic on my blog).
I second Who Is Coming to Our House - perfect for the wee littles.
I don't think anyone has mentioned The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree by Gloria Houston, illus. Barbara Cooney. This is an Appalachian story with classic Cooney pictures, not a Catholic book but a truly heartwarming story (always makes me cry) of love and hope.

I think it is OOP....but I found a used copy for VERY CHEAP sometime last summer. Just checked bestbookbuys.com and there are many inexpensive copies available.

Just a quick note to say I am finding some wonderful books. I almost can't bear to keep them under wrap.
Thank you all so much for the suggestions and the prayers. The list continues to grow. Please continue to pray. March will be a major work-month for me concerning this project.

Amy, I am in awe of this book. Such a Mosaic of feelings, warmth, emotions, family, teachable moments, virtues, etc.!!!
I read the library copy but I simply have to get our own copy by next Christmas.

When I found this one at the library my first thought was "A mouse story. Can't be too mosaic-y."  I read it because we all love Karma Wilson and The Bear Snores On .
For a mouse book, this one stands mighty tall. The ending had a drop of Jan Brett's Gingerbread Baby in it. It might not make the featured list but it definitely made the booklist.  Only Karma Wilson can pull this type of book off with animals.

We read Mortimer's Christmas Manager this Christmas and both my boys really enjoyed it. DS#1 and I especially enjoyed the ending.

So sorry I haven't been back to check this thread. I have a new baby and . . . well . . . that says it all!
I think your only question left unanswered was about The Lion in the Box. It is about a family that is very poor and this huge box is delivered to their door. I won't spoil the surprise and say what is inside, but my heart used to beat fast with excitement every time I read it, even though I had read the story before.
It is written at about the same level as her other books, probably third/fourth grade, but it is a read aloud appropriate for probably 4 years and up. I think it is around 100 or so pages, with typical de Angeli illustrations sprinkled throughout.

I was thinking about The Lion in the Box. It's not a Mosaic book, I don't think. It's a great story, but it's like All-of-a-Kind Family or something like that. It's enjoyable but lacks the depth that a Mosaic book needs. It's not beautiful, in that sense. A good read, but not a Mosaic read!
