Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

May I suggest
Gustav Mahler?1860-1910

I've become interested in his music because Leonard Bernstein was such a fan of his.

So far from watching Bernstein's Young People's Concerts, I've learned:

Symphony #4 has very happy, fairy like music. The last movement has a soprano singing a German poem about heaven.

I copied the words from the Bernstein show:
“We are enjoying the pleasures of heaven
Free from all the troubles and noise of earth
Everything is quiet in heaven
In gentle repose
Lots of fun just the same
We dance and skip and sing
With St. Peterlooking on
When we are hungry, St. John brings us lamb to eat (an oboe? will make the sound of the lamb)
And St. Luke brings us beef (a French horn makes the sound of an ox)
We can eat everything we want from the heavenly garden
Bowls full of asparagus, beans, apples, pears grapes
And if you want venison, a deer comes running down the street
If you want a hosenfeefer, a rabbit comes running down the street
If you want seafood the fishes come
Where St. Peter is standing ready with his nets and bait to catch them.
The cook, of course is St. Martha
And as for music there is no music on this earth which compares to our music in heaven
St. Cecilia and all her relatives are marvelous musicians and the angels voices cheer up our spirits and everything lives for joy – everything is joy."

Mahler loved Chinese music and poetry:
The Song of the Earth (based on Chinese ideas)
According to Bernstein: Big symphony sung from beginning to end. (Apparently this is very famous.)

Mahler also has a German like folk song called:
St. Anthony preaching to the fish

which is performed on Bernstein's show:
A Toast to Viennese time.

In "Humor in the Music Hall" part of
Symphony #1 is performed.
The symphony is based on Freres Jaques but with gloomy instruments and a funeral march tempo.
Bernstein calls this “incongruous.”

This is all I have so far. I'm looking forward to learning more.

Helen,
Thanks you so much for doing this. I have been so so sick with this pregnancy and couldn't even begin to think about this.

You did a great job.

I'm not sure where to post this...
But, I'm very excited about the January composer of the Month. I hope you'll share my enthusiasm - I just can't post about it now.
Fortunately, January is a long month, so if we start this weekend we still have plenty of time to enjoy ...
