Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'd reeeaaally like to add copywork/dictation to our school day but every time I do I panic and go back to the workbooks! Can someone give me some advice on how to stop doing that!!

And any advice on where to get copywork and how do these two diciplines look in your homeschool.

Thanks so much!!

Lisa -

My children are younger than yours (7 and 4), so I am sure I keep it lighter than you do. When they narrate a story (chapter, etc) back to me, I type it up and that is what I have them use for copywork. I use a software program called StartWrite for the typing.

We also read about a different Saint every day, and I will incorporate more copywork and dictation from those readings. I also use any other books we may be reading that day and will just pick out a few sentences or paragraphs and dictate them. I have even used recipes - anything to get them in the habit of writing.

Good luck and God Bless,

Paula

I try to make copywork a daily part of the children's studies, using whatever sources they are currently reading. For example, at the moment, my nine year old is copying entire tales from Aesop's Fables and watercoloring them at the end of the week, hoping to have her own Fable book to give as a gift by Christmas. She has also been copying parts of her lines as Puck (and the lines of other characters) in preparation for our upcoming performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Recently, she copied Tantum Ergo Sacramentum in English.

My seven year old is copying some beautiful religious poetry, hoping to use it as part of her First Communion Notebook eventually.

In other words, we use the sources we have on hand and try to do a little every day, but we attempt to use the copywork as part of larger projects as often as possible. The most important thing is that beautiful literary works are chosen and that it is done little by little each day.

Thanks for the replies. I understand how one can learn capitalization and punctuation and perhaps spelling from copywork and dictation, but how are you teaching parts of speech etc.? Also, how does your copywork/dication schedule look?

Thanks!
