Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

(I wasn't sure if this belonged here or in Real Learning?)

I was wondering what you all do with your kids to commemorate Election Day? I put up a post this morning with a few ideas ... I especially love the idea of an Election Cake (as found at Catholic Culture - Jenn, was that your doing? ) We probably won't have the time to make that, but we will make frosted sugar cookies and herbal tea.

Any other plans or ideas?

I think we are going to be studying Susan B. Anthony today and we may have strawberry stars for a snack, mmm!
Slice a strawberry thinly using a knife or an egg slicer. Arrange 5 slices in a 5 pointed star. Fill center with whipped cream or ice cream if you have a freezer. Sprinkle with blueberries and enjoy!

Yes, I put that in there. Too bad it's a yeasted cake...too much time for that. More on Hartford Election Cake and here.

But the background is so fascinating. You should keep your eyes open for books by Dorothy Gladys Spicer, Out-of-print, of course. She has quite a few...some cookbooks, some on party ideas, some on traditions from other lands. All from a secular view, but it's quite informative and fascinating (at least to me). Here's an online book of Festivals of Western Europe. The book just gives little snippets, and of course things have changed quite a bit, but still fun to read. Some of her other books go into more depth than this one.

We're proud to say my mother's side is related to her S. B. Anthony.

I think those patriotic flag cakes or American as apple pie would be nice for today. Check out this ideapretzel sparklers. What fun!

Some party ideas Election Party.

I'm a little under the weather so we aren't doing much today. We got to Mass to pray for the election, and the cemetery to earn the plenary indulgence for the Poor Souls (one more day for that), and voted. That's the extent of our day.

Boy, you guys celebrate everything. I don't have the energy - or time that you guys do, so mostly we celebrate by the kiddies all going with me to vote. One day I'll pull out some of your ideas - glad they are archived.

The poll worker generally gives every child a sticker saying, "I voted." They also hear me ponder whatever happened to the secret ballot. Now anyone could look over your shoulder and see how you voted - I liked the little booths from of old, even if it did take a bit longer. Oh well. We also have discussions about civic duty - even when it is ponderously difficult and I am writing in friends as candidates as I cannot, in conscience, vote for the one person running for an office.

I talked about that yesterday, too. I love the old booths with the curtains, pulling the lever. Why can't we have those anymore?

How funny! We still have those booths. I had no idea that they had gotten rid of them!
