Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please help this mama of girls! Well, I have boys, too, but they are my little guys so I don't have any "boy knowledge"!

We are rejoicing that the Detroit Tigers won their series and the GIRLS want to go off on a baseball rabbit trail but I don't know where to begin.

Any read aloud suggestions....or any suggestions!

Thanks in advance!

Amanda Bennett has a baseball unit study for sale at her website. We did it last spring. My daughter had a great time learning about states, baseball legends, rules, etc.

Your library probably has lots of books about teams, legendary players, etc. I'd start there. My son (14) really enjoyed watching Ken Burns' Baseball series on DVD (we borrowed it from the library). My daughter (8) wasn't as interested.

There are some good websites, too (Louisville Slugger baseball bats has one with fun baseball bat trivia). Also, check out the team website for the Tigers...they probably have a history of the team, lists of famous players...pretty much all the teams have something like this online.

Don't forget baseball math problems (at grade level...you could have them calculate scores or something like that).

Have fun!

A couple of books we've enjoyed like Baseball Saved Us and H is for Homerun have been mentioned in some of the previous baseball threads (here and here). There are baseball picture books suggestions in one thread and more unit study and website offerings in the other.

Another book that hasn't been mentioned is Frank and Ernest Play Ball by Alexandra Day. If you are not familiar with Frank and Ernest books they are really a fun way to learn some of the "lingo" of particular occupations/activities - in this case baseball.

Since you mentioned having daughters they might be particularly interested in reading some stories about young ladies playing baseball.
Mama Played Baseball
Girl Wonder: A Baseball Story in Nine Innings - love Deborah Hopkinson!
Players in Pigtails

Also we love the movie, The Rookie. There is great Catholic imagery in it - with a connection to St. Rita of Cascia.

I haven't seen it yet, but this Baseball Counting Book looks like a great baseball math rabbit trail for younger ones.

Thank you, thank you for all these great suggestions. We're going to the library this afternoon! Thanks especially for the girl baseball books...my oldest will probably be glad for it!

That's for sure!

We got Baseball Saved Us and Casey at the Bat at the library this afternoon as well as a DVD of The Rookie. I'm looking forward to this study more than I thought. I've requested several more books from other branches.

Thanks for all your help!

GO TIGERS!!!
