I often make yogurt at home, and I had never thought of using a yogurt maker! I checked the link you provided, but all the yogurt makers they have require the cook to do the most difficult part: heating the milk on the stove to the right temperature and then watching the thermometer while it cools. Since all the yogurt makers listed are really just "holding tanks" I'm not sure that the model you choose matters that much. I can see the value in a tidy appliance, but I think you can make your choice based on cost and packaging and not on difference in function or taste.

I prefer the taste of homemade yogurt because it is not as tart. I also like that I choose my flavorings and so control the sugar. (Though I haven't figured out how to make lemon, does anyone know how to do this?).

I have a Yogourmet. I love it. I make 2 quarts of plain yogurt one day and vanilla the next...we go through tons of it. The plain vanilla was mostly give to the dog. He needs it

I don't spend much time making it, I just bring the milk to a boil, turn it off, and then wait about 30-40 minutes for it to be cool enough to add some of the leftover yogurt from the day before. Every few weeks or so, I buy a small carton of yogurt to refresh my cultures.

Thanks so much, we eat tons of it here too and would like for ours to be organic, so that should work great to just buy a small carton of whole organic and then make our own. We like to add a touch of honey to plain and of course vanilla is a big fave here too!!

Appreciate the replies, now I am not sure whether to get one with one big container or the 8 small ones ??

i have used both and think the one big container works better. the 8 small were difficult to pour, took up more space and more work to clean. i also don't think they set as well.

I have not tried a machine, just the quart jar and heating pad. I love that stuff However I had to stop eating dairy for the sinuses to drain.

This site says you can make yogurt with soy milk! If so , that's really good news for me...I'm off to research this possiblity. Has anyone with dairy allergies tried it? What about goat's milk? I hear there's an organic source near me. Does it cause as much of a problem with mucus thickening as cow's milk?

I have really like our Yogourmet. My suggestion would be to by two of the plastic containers that you make the yogurt it so you can keep a constant supply going. It's a bit of splurge, but I thought that it was well worth it!

I just bought a Yogourmet off ebay for about $25!! (Well, shipping made it more...) I've only made a couple batches but what I like best is the 2 qt size! One quart would just not be enough around here.

And at what point do you add the vanilla?? I really want to try vanilla!

I add about 1/2 cup of sugar to the 2 quarts of milk when I am bringing it to a boil, then after it is cooled down, I add about a teaspoon of vanilla.

How are you doing with the heating pad method? Its a shame I have this steady abundant supply of milk and am not making yogurt regularly. I couldnt get the right temp in my tempermental over.

Gwen - I have found that raw cow's milk does not cause the sinus issues with me that regular pasteurized, homogenized milk did. Don't know why but I suspect it's enzyme related or something. But, depending on the laws where you live, raw milk might not be an option. Just an FYI.

Is this sweet enough that your kids like it? My kids don't like my homemade yogurt. I have been hunting all over for a recipe they will eat!

Hmm, would one pre-heat and then turn it off, or leave it on. I'm afraid mine would be much too hot even on low Love to hear if anyone has tried this!!

I think I'm in yogurt envy! We love yogurt around here, too. I tried making it once (actually more like 5-10 times) with this Salton yogurt maker.

I don't know what I did (or didn't do) but mine always turned out to be soupy goop. Too hot? I tried watching the temperature more closely.

This conversation has me ready to try again.

I always add some powdered milk to mine when I am heating up the milk, and it comes out thicker.
