Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Jan Brett has a great Noah's Ark mural craft on her website.
I am hoping to find a way to work into dd's studies this year.

Found a beautifully illustrated book by Rien Poortvliet:

Noah's Ark

I am a big fan of Poortvliet's art.

The Bible story is there, but the text accompanying the illustrations reads like a journal: Mr. Poortvliet's musings about Noah and the ark and how things must have been inside the ark.... he's also got LOTS and LOTS of "thinking aloud" about the animals and how they're wonderfully made by God, e.g., how awesome God is to think up all the different heads and feet and bodies. I was struck by the playful, but reverent, tone. There are a couple of places where he lightly mentions the animals probably "getting at it" after leaving the ark, but it *may* go over some kids' heads (mine didn't notice these at all) or you can edit as you read aloud.

We loved it so much I'm ordering a copy for our home library.

Oh, and in case you're interested, he also made this:

He Was One of Us

Okay, for months I was going to add to this thread - now all the Noah books I checked out to review are due so I better get it done. I liked Jenn's basic outline as a checklist of what is included in each.

JennGM wrote:
The world is sinful
Noah is a good man, faithful to God.
God calls him and his family to build the ark.
Fill the ark with animals.
The rain and floods come.
They land and give thanks to God.
And God gives a rainbow as a sign of his covenant.

Pinkney's version Noah's Ark is the most true to the Bible account of those I read here. Both the text and illustrations are excellent. Since this one had already been mentioned here, I'll share some that haven't been mentioned yet.

Why Noah Chose the Dove - It's illustrated by Eric Carle so it's lovely in that respect. The beginning and ending are pretty faithful to the Biblical account. There is no mention of giving thanks to God when they land though. God's promise to never destroy the earth is mentioned but rainbow not included. The main part of most of the story is how each animal was vainly trying to show how they were most important and should be taken on the ark, all except the humble dove - which is why Noah ends up choosing the dove to as his messenger.

Noah and the Great Flood is an interesting one. It remains faithful to this basic list of story elements, but is embellished with flood story legends that have arisen from Jewish tradition(like a race of giants inhabiting the earth at that time, fanciful/mythical creatures included on the ark, the ark helping to build itself, Angel Raphael bringing a book to Noah).

The Ark is very simple in text but true to the Biblical story line (except no mention of giving thanks on landing). I really liked the ink line drawing illustrations. There is a lot of detail in them and it's fun to just explore them visually. I especially loved the picture of the jars of insects hanging from a rope - great way to transport 2 of evey insect as I hadn't thought about that before!

A Stowaway on Noah's Ark never mentions God. Noah speaks to the sky and the sky speaks back commanding him to build the ark. Looks up to the sky again after they have landed and a rainbow appears. Main part of the story is about a mouse who was not chosen, but stowed away onboard. The illustrations are lovely though, but not a Mosaic book.

Adding:

The Animals Came Two By Two ( Christopher Wormell) - Generally follows the biblical story. The illustrations are stunning - I love woodcuts. Each animal has a page and is contrasted with an animal on the opposite page (example Opossum's labeled "the timid..." opposite the lion page labeled "and the bold." ) which I thought was a fun addition. The appendix at the end of the book highlights each of the animals featured and tells a little about them.
