Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

i am trying to make decisions re hymns and folk music and am having a really hard time deciding because i would really like to have recordings that are sing-along-able and i am also pretty particular about style (i don't enjoy children singing, synthetic music, rock and roll... sigh...).

ideally i would like accapella, or at least minimal, simple, acoustic music. and since i dont even really know where to begin, a whole album might be just fine, for folk and hymns each, so we could just listen to it all year.

any ideas? am i asking too much?

For folk music - We've been pleased with American Folk Songs for Children. We have the accompanying CD.

Edited to add: A friend let me know of the political leanings of the Segers who did the American Folk Songs for Children recording. You may want to look into these connections before proceeding.

Anybody have a list of songs that they feel everyone should know? I am thinking of teaching one per month. Both patriotic/ folk and hymns would be nice.

Here's one folk-song playlist. It's from the Ambleside Online Advisory's blog, and I believe there are other lists there as well. Those ladies are pretty excellent and exhaustive when it comes to knowing folk songs!

And from a friend, some liturgical-season playlists:

Advent

Christmas

Lent

Easter

I think there's also an Imagine Sisters channel on Spotify, where you could find lots of chant. Another resource we have enjoyed is the CD/Songbook from Memoria Press's Lingua Angelica program -- you can buy the components separately, and even though we've never really done the LA program, we have loved the music! Classic Latin hymns, carols, and chants my kids have grown up on include the Salve Regina, Resonet in Laudibus, the Stabat Mater, Christus Vincit, parts of the Missa de Angelis . . . it's a great collection.

God bless,

Sally
