Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Please pray for the repose of James Foley's soul. Jim is the American reporter who was kidnapped while reporting in Syria almost two years ago. Today the news is reporting that ISIS beheaded him and posted the video of the killing on the internet.

Also, please pray for his family, who is suffering so terribly right now. His parents are members of my parish. His mom released this statement just a short while ago:

"We have never been prouder of our son Jim. He gave his life trying to expose the world to the suffering of the Syrian people."

"We implore the kidnappers to spare the lives of the remaining hostages. Like Jim, they are innocents. They have no control over American government policy in Iraq, Syria or anywhere in the world.

"We thank Jim for all the joy he gave us. He was an extraordinary son, brother, journalist and person. Please respect our privacy in the days ahead as we mourn and cherish Jim."

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Praying for his family as they grieve.

I have been praying all day. So sad and horrific. Each day I am sickened by the reports of the inhuman cruelty of ISIS, and the terrible suffering of Christians and other religious minorities.

Jim Foley was a great journalist - I had watched his interview with Bill O'Reilly a while ago - and I had been so impressed by his sincerity in wanting to let the world know what was happening inside Syria.

Let us pray too for the other American journalists being held. And for our world - Lord have mercy on us.

Jim Foley's own words. May he rest in peace and may his family be comforted in the knowledge that their son truly knew what matters in this life. Praying for all those in harm's way and for an end to the inhumanity.

I have been praying since I heard the sad news, whenever his name pops into my head or I hear it on the radio.

I was struck by the peace in his parents' voices during their press conference. It was clear they are sad and horrified, but their love for their son really came through.

May God grant Jim eternal rest and give Jim's family His peace at this sad time in their lives.

May perpetual light shine upon Jim Foley. I read Jim Foley's article from a few years ago yesterday on Marquette's website. From that article, he sounds like a faithful Catholic.

I'm taking comfort that he was a prayerful man. But oh, so heartbreaking and tragic.    May he rest in peace.
