No one? I saw the thread this morning but was out all day so didn't have time to respond. It's such a rare occurance there's gotta be some fun ways to recognize it.
Leaping/jumping games
~leap frog
~checkers
~tiddly winks
~make up some hopping or leaping contests (who can leap the furthest - or highest, obstacle course to jump over)
Math - practice skip counting 4's
Learn about the transition from the Roman calendar to the Julian calendar
St Oswald
- Archbishop of York, he died on 29 February 992 in the act of washing the feet of the poor at Worcester, as was his daily custom during Lent. The memorial is celebrated on February 29 during Leap Years and on February 28 during common years.

I never even thought about doing something special...but makes total fun sense!
So I think I'm just going to surprise the kids in the morning with a "let's drop school today" holiday but instead everyone has to pick something they wouldn't normally do, take a "leap" out of there comfort zone, so to speak! HA!
And maybe since frogs do seem to be a sort of theme, with leaping and all, maybe some sort of fun green food!

I just read about an idea to create a family time capsule and open it up on the next leap year.
Here are several ideas for that frog Leap theme. I really like #13 frog apples
And lets not forget a perfect copywork poem for tomorrow from that sweet Mother Goose rhyme:
"Thirty days hath September,
April, June and November.
All the rest have thirty-one,
Excepting February alone,
And that has twenty-eight days clear
And twenty-nine in each leap year."

Family Time capsule....great idea!
I made one for my first dd...to be opened when she turned 18. She is just a little over a year away from that, but I'll tell ya I made that thing yesterday!

Okay here is something weird...so when this reply from MaryM came into my email inbox it said it was connected to my community board message about my science books and then when I clicked on the link...MaryM's link it did go to the origami frog...but when I went back to my email and clicked on the link to "go to the thread" it took me to the science books. Weird!!!!!
Anyhoo...I can pull this idea off easily and quickly, thanks Mary! and sorry for the tangent!

Totally my mistake Kacky - you caught me...I am often very scattered when I read 4 Real so I was flitting around threads and was reading your science book sales thread. But I thought I was still in the Leap Year thread when I found the origami frog and so I posted it. As soon as it posted I realized I put it in the wrong thread and deleted it right away and then posted it again here in the correct thread.
So that is what I get for "leaping" carelessly around the 4 Real threads like a leap year frog....

And Google is noting the day this way - leap year and composer Rossini's birthday (The Barber of Seville)

Some books I came across in a search but haven't read:
It's My Birthday Finally! A Leap Year Story
Leap's Day: February 29
Leap Year Book
And in sports ESPN has some tributes to famous "leaps"
Celebrating the greatest leaps of all time
They had a clip of famous leaps on ESPN but I'm not finding it on the website.

another game is "leap the river" (or maybe it's call jump the river or ?? ) but anyway.. you lay out two ropes (the space between the ropes is the river) and you leap over it.. and then you move the ropes further apart and do it again.. untill everyone has "fallen in the river" or I guess until you have one person left if you need a winner

Well the day is done - gone for another 4 years...but if you want a jump on the next leap day, I forgot to add the idea of talking about various "leap" idioms:
Leap of Faith
Jump to Conclusions
Jump at the chance
And reading Aesop's fables:
The Fox and the Goat (look before you leap)
The Leap at Rhodes
The Fox and the Grapes

Thanks for the books, I brought two to them yesterday, BECAUSE.........My brother had his first baby born yesterday morning!!!!!
His wife wasn't due until March, but I guess little Joseph had different ideas.
