Big anniversary this year (2012) for the Washington DC cherry trees which so beautifully grace the Washington DC landscape around the Mall and monuments.
100 Years
They were a gift to the nation's capital from Tokyo through the work of Eliza Scidmore.
Read her story here in this great new picture book. It tells of Eliza and her perserverance in bring the trees to our nation's capital. - Eliza's Cherry Trees: Japan's Gift to America
A more detailed telling of the history of the trees and the annual festival that is synonymous with Spring in DC. - The Cherry Blossom Festival: Sakura Celebration
Martha Stewart has a couple great crafts with tissue paper:
Tissue Paper Cherry Blossom Tree Craft
Paper Cherry Blossom Display
Popcorn Cherry Blossom Craft for the younger set - really cute.
Cherry Blossom Art Project
Sakura Kirigami (paper cut flowers)
Lots of cute crochet projects:
Cherry Blossom Scarf
Cherry Blossom Clutch
Simple flowers
US Postal Service is issuing an awesome panoramic stamp in March to commemorate the annivesary.
Another stamp featuring the DC cherry blossoms was printed in 1960 to recognize 100 years of US-Japan relations.
Want to share in a sakura (Japanese for cherry blossom and trees) and cherry blossom study? Post thoughts and ideas...

I'm going to try to find a copy of this Japanese legend about Cherry trees. Under the Cherry Blossom Tree: An Old Japanese Tale
And it might be fun to include some talk about American cherry trees with are different, especially this month with Washington's Birthday, when we remember the fable/legend of "chopping down the cherry tree."

The National Park Service has a web cam for the cherry blossoms. Obviously still early for any blooms, but it will be fun to watch as the weather gets warmer. Here is the NPS bloom schedule info. The NPS has a lot of info on their site, including history.
And here are a couple more craft ideas:

Mary, this is wonderful! We moved to the Washington DC area recently and have not yet seen the cherry blossoms, so this will be really helpful for us! Thank you!

Does anyone have a Cherry Tree poem in their repertoire? I found only ONE in my poem books and was going to go on-line later tonight, but just in case anyone wanted to "save me from myself."

Suzanne,
Great idea. I didn't have any but googling did find this lovely little collection of cherry blossom haikus written by Basho. It's on YouTube.

Simple tea light idea with tissue paper that has cherry blossoms on it. Not sure how easy tissue paper like that would be to find...

Your welcome, Suzanne. I thought of Foreign Lands by Robert Louis Srevenson as another poem that mentions cherry trees. It's a great classic to memorize, but it doesn't so much describe cherry trees as just mentions them. However, another option is sometimes good!

Another cherry blossom art project to add to unit. Even though the big anniversary year has passed this is always a great spring theme.
