Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

In honor of Mother's Day, I have chosen Mary Cassatt as May's artist of the month. Cassatt is famous for her paintings of mothers with children.

Mary Stevenson Cassatt was born on May 22, 1844 in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. More biography can be found here.

Olga's Gallergy of Cassatt shows a nice selection of her works.

Pictures to come!

Amy

Thanks so much for putting this together. I love Mary Cassat -- first time I saw her work was when I had just graduated from undergrad, moved to DC with mom and dad and we went to a show at the Natl Gallery.

This is perfect for finishing up the year.

Hey Amy -- you "forgot" this one

The Young Bride, 1875 -- seems she's knitting a sock! Gee, I wonder why this would be one of my favorite paintings?

Amy, you are such a dear to do this every month. My family so appreciates it! We just love the choices you have made.

Anyone have any good book recommendations for a child-friendly Mary Cassatt biography?

Mary Cassatt: Family Pictures is lovely. It's from the "Smart About Art" series.

Mike Venezia's books are always a good bet.

Suzette and the Puppy is a charming picture book giving a fictionalized account of the painting "Little Girl in a Blue Armchair"

For info/activity books I recommend:
Picture This! about the Impressionists Cassatt, Monet, Renoir, Degas, and Pissarro
Monet and the Impressionists for Kids - it has a whole section on Mary Cassatt.

There are also a couple books for really young children that use illustrations of Mary Cassatt.
Baby Loves - a rhyming text to Cassatt pictures
Child's Book of Lullabies-lullabies with Cassatt painting for illustrations

These are both just beautiful, because her work is so beautiful and fitting for these stories for young children/toddlers.

Great choice Amy - it really does fit in with May and Mother's Day!

Thanks for this picture study, Amy. My brother recently bought a copy of Lilacs in Window (I would paste a picture if I was clever enough ) for my daughter's birthday on May 22nd. He said that lilacs always reminded him of dd as they bloomed on her birthday. They must have reminded Mary Cassatt of her birthday too!

Thanks so much for doing this. I wish I had a library for some of the Mary Cassatt books recommended, but at least we shall enjoy some laminated prints of these pieces during May. I really appreciate all the thought and effort; it makes enriching our homeschool so much easier.

In our reading one of the biographies on Mary Cassatt - it says she studied Madonna and Child paintings which helped her to paint her contemporary paintings of mothers caring for their small children. This would be a great thing to add to this study since it's Our Lady's month - Compare some Madonna and Child paintings to Mary Cassatt's paintings.
