I read recently read (I think it was in "Honey For a Child's Heart") that some books are so good they teach good morals with no effort at all.
We recently listened to Heidi by Johanna Spyri on cd, and it struck me that Heidi is definitely "one of those books".
Great story with great morals-my kids were enthralled (Peter was so, so naughty in so many interesting ways, God bless him). But so many great lessons are woven through the whole story. I find myself still pondering many of them over a month later.
What other books fall into this category- great story; great morals?
This is a question I am mulling over these days as I consider the cold weather ahead and the time we'll spend indoors doing more reading.....

Any book by Hilda van Stockum! (Note: The Borrowed House, while excellent, is best for older children (early teens), according to the author herself.)

I was even thinking today that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fits in with this. We have been listening to it at lunch time because, really, who doesn't love Roald Dahl? The more I listen to it, though, the more I see how each of the other children exemplified one really bad vice and how eventually it led to their demise. Very smooth, Roald Dahl, very smooth.

Melinda, if you all enjoyed Heidi, you would probably also like Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates. It is similar to Heidi in that it tells a lot about Holland, even including its history and quite a bit about the Dutch artists. Hans is a poor but noble boy, and the story illustrates the virtues of thrift, loyalty, honesty, and compassion. I linked to an older edition illustrated by Paul Galdone, but I'm sure your library has it. Be careful, though, as many of the newer editions are abridged. You can probably also obtain the audio book from your library.
We went off on a little rabbit trail when we read this book over the winter last year. We also read A Day on Skates and The Greatest Skating Race. We went ice skating several times and also watch ice skating competitions. We studied Van Gogh and Rembrandt. I meant to force some bulbs but never quite got to that activity. Lots you can do with this book! It was perfect for winter!

Oh, That is a good one!
We just finished Anne of Green Gables. I think that qualifies as well.
