Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Sarah,

We are doing this independently and we came up with Doha, Qatar 25.30N, 51.50E for MC#8.

I just posted but saw that Michelle beat me to it. If your son still wants to try to figure it himself here are some ideas to lead him to the locaiton Michelle posted.
--------

Sarah,I got your PM, too. Wow, moving and all - please don't worry about not getting to this.

If your son does want to try to figure it out let me give some clues that might help. From our assessment you are right on to be on the Arabian Penninsula.

The first clue from Journey North said "Our country is on a peninsula," but this is very literal for this country - it's part of the Arabian Peninsula but have him look at pictures of that peninsula and see if there are any peninsulas off that major one that are also a whole country to itself.

Then try to find out more about that country -
on a map, does it have an inland sea?
"Our country has an inland sea, surrounded by desert."

The last clue about preparing for some upcoming games ("Our city is getting ready for games. Take a look at the mascot of our games.") is perhaps the best at narrowing it down to city. If you google search
arabian peninsula games 2006
a telling link comes up as first option.

Hi. This has been quite a stumper for my family! We have a guess although I don't knowif it is right- we tried our best.

Mystery class #10-

I came up with 41 degrees for latitude. (Mary M. I know you said you came up with a higher one). I tried to find on the computer how we did it and just can't.
Our city guess- Ismailly?

We know the country is Azerbaijan.

The longitude I had was 48.25

I couldn't find any city that matched.

The last clue said the city and rayon were the same. And that the name of the city was similiar to a famous Safavid leader.

If anyone figured out another answer please let me know! Thanks.

Tracy M. (and my oldest ds is in 3rd grade)

We've been trying to decide between Agsu and Kurdimir, but since you mentioned Ismailly I did a search. One of their most famous Safavid leaders was named Ismail. I think I am leaning to Ismailly because of that. Still haven't decided though...

Hi all,
We've been struggling to keep up here, too. This is what we've come to this morning:

Mystery location #2: Dushanbe, Tajikistan
Latitude: 38n35
Longitude: 68e48

Still trying to read through some of the past posts...looks like I need to convert those to decimals and grades here are 5th and 6th. How to convert to decimals?
Thanks and God bless,
Angela

Ooooh, the Azerbaijan one is challenging. Since I had calculated the latitude at around 41.5 N I was focusing a little further north and since it wasn't right on anything had narrowed it to 4 possible towns. When we got the clue that the city is the same as the rayon we went with Quba since of our 4, that was the only one that fit. I totally spaced considering the Safivid ruler part of the clue (oops). So I'm with Michelle W, that your guess Tracy is more likely. It is further south than I was looking but I have been finding that small amount of change in latitude doesn't change photoperiod length as dramatically as the longitude variation changes sunrise/sunset times. I think Ismailly is likely the town. What is bugging me about this Mystery Class is that there is not a good place to find sunrise/sunset times for past months for these small towns. For all the other locations, since the cities ended up being more major cities, that was easily available to verify. Is there anyone else who has been doing them all - Gwen, Theresa? What is your guess?

We are going to agree with Ismailli as well, since it fits the Rayon and the Safivid ruler clues.
I am learning so much from this! Oh, I mean ds is learning so much...

I don't have a better guess than Ismailli (also spelled Ismailly) but I wanted to tell you what I found out about it.
According to this site, its Lat/Lon is: 40.8° N 48.1° E

If you put this in as 40n48 and 48e6 (this is a correct translation, right?) on the NASA Sunrise/Sunset info site, the numbers do not match up exactly with the times posted on Journey North.

Just some food for thought. This has really been fun and interesting! I'm glad we did it as a group.

Okay, here is something I just found on another part of the "Journey North" website.

"This Just In: Azerbaijan is Blooming!

Ismayilli, Azerbaijan
A satellite view.
Students in Ismayilli, Azerbaijan announced spring's arrival this week. Our first garden in Azerbaijan has bloomed. The Peace Corps Volunteer working with them last fall got a phone call announcing the good news.
Was YOUR prediction correct? Check your records from last fall when we asked you to find gardens in North America that you think will bloom at the same time as each European garden.

Try This!
Ismayilli (40.77, 48.15) tulips bloomed on March 8.
Which gardens in North America bloomed at about the same time?"

When I use these values at the NASA website, the sunrise and sunset times come out EXACTLY.

Ismayilli has just got to be correct!

Way to go, Detective Jen!

I've made the updates. We have infor for every location. Is everyone in agreement then that what we have posted are our guesses? I can get that ready to post to Journey North.

O.K.....I'm back.....we triple checked our guess and we are 100% positive. We had the Brazil, Paraguay and Germany locations figured out and are glad to see the guesses for the others.

I found out something new during this project. While I was learning and guessing and problem solving with my kids, they learned just as much if not more than if I had already known the answers and made them go off and figure it out on their own. Hmmm....food for thought to chew on while I plan for next year.

Oh...oh....I am so excited.....the last clue mentions that they gave their sister city a tea house as a gift. I had a hunch it was in Boulder so I googled and sure enough, there was the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse!! This is about 25 min. away from me.

Mary, I sense another field trip in our future
