We are required by our state to do spelling. We used CHC's speller last year and DS did a great job with it. This year, we are switching to CM and following a lot of Mater Amabilis' suggestions.

I don't know what to do for spelling. I know I could use dictation and save his papers to show the evaluator "progress", but I don't know WHAT to use for dictation. I looked at Spelling Wisdom from Simply Charlotte Mason, but they don't recommend it until age 10. DS is almost 8.

I found spelling lists at All About Spelling and I suppose I could make up sentences for dictation based on those words. But geesh, not sure I have the extra time for more work.

Maybe I am making this more difficult than it needs to be.

Spelling Wisdom from SCM explains that Book 1 can cover grades 3, 4, and 5. For simplicity, I would do that if I was in your situation.

I like the spelling word lists from Sound Beginnings/Writing Road to Reading...although I don't think it has dictation sentences all ready for you.

I am going to use Spelling Wisdom for my 9YO. I ordered the e-book with all five sets of books. IMO, it starts slowly enough that you could use it with an 8YO. Exercise one, for example, is "I am; I can; I ought; I will." Exercise two is "Better be safe than sorry."

You can always take it more slowly, doing one a week or something.

(I'm struggling with what to do with my almost 6YO - do I order the CHC speller or do I skip spelling altogether follow the CM approach???).

Didn't Charlotte Mason say something about decisions being the greatest effort?

Monica, I am wondering the same thing about my almost 6YO! I thought of maybe just getting letter tiles and having her practice spelling/making sight words or words from her readers. Maybe a white board, too.

Spelling Wisdom is a good idea.....just take it REALLY slowly, follwing DS's cues. Third grade is on the younger side to start dictation....but if you're "required" and do it "gently" it's a great way to ease into it.

CM advised not beginning dictation until age 10, and though her word certainly does not make it law, I do think it bears some weight.
Keeping that in mind, at a younger age, another idea would be to just use your copywork for spelling.
After dc does copywork, simply underline a couple of words from the passage, ask dc to study them a bit, then a few moments later or the next day or whatever(whenever they feel ready) ask them to write the words underneath the passage without looking at the passage. Then have them check their spelling by looking back at the passage, correcting any errors.
This would be a simple way to add spelling practice without buying an entire curriculum, plus it would give you something to show your evaluator.
